One thing all college kids have in common; a little part of us dies every time we look at our decreasing savings account. However, these six, half-day excursions allow you to explore some of the best locations Southern California has to offer without further draining your bank account.
During the school year, between homework and constant commitments to organizations both on and off campus, it is almost impossible to find time to take the day off and explore the incredible attractions throughout Southern California. However, the long, commitment-free days during the summertime provide a perfect opportunity to cross off these cool places on your bucket list that you never had time to adventure to before. Ranging from a few minutes, to a few hours away from San Diego, these attractions will fill a boring summer day with plenty of adventure.
1. Hermit Falls. This is one of
the best cliff jumping spots in Southern California. This 2.6 mile hike, leads to two waterfalls; one ranging from 20 to 25 feet and the other, 50 feet. You can almost always find people jumping off either one of these cliffs, that is, if they have the
courage.
2. Salvation Mountain. This may be the biggest work
of art Southern California has to offer.
Every year, thousands of people drive here to climb and explore this historical
landmark which is covered in passionate artwork and inspiring quotes. This bright and colorful masterpiece brings
character to the barren desert of the Imperial Valley.
3. Arch Rock: Located in a residential neighborhood
in Corona del Mar, this spot is far from crowded. Just a short swim from the shore, you can climb up onto arch rock and enjoy a breathtaking view
of Corona Del Mar. However, the real
excitement is the rush of jumping from the 30-foot rock into the oncoming waves.
4. Stonewall Peak: This four mile hike offers a full 360-degree view of
San Diego that cannot be seen from any other location. You can see as far North as the Palomar
Observatory, South to Mexico, East to the Salton Sea, and West to the ocean. The unbelievable view is more than worth the
hike to this peak.
5. Thousand Steps Beach: Besides having a beautiful beach, low tide reveals endless caves and tide pools to explore. On the other side of these caves, lies a hidden
natural pool where you can relax all day as waves powerfully splash up against
the side, creating an explosion of whitewash. This hidden pool is one of the best kept secrets in Laguna.
6. Santa Paula Punchbowl: Although this hike is a
little more lengthy and difficult, it is completely worth the trip. The trail encompasses several different punch bowls, which include waterfalls, deep
pools to swim in and natural water slides that are better than any slip 'n' slide
out there. There are also rope swings to
add to the excitement.
A few hours of
driving from San Diego can take you a long way. Southern California has so many things to explore for people seeking real
adventure. A short day trip to one of
these natural landmarks can lead to the experience of a lifetime, especially on
the budget of a broke college kid.
