After the sugar overload and food comas, we approach the New Year optimistic. It's possible that we might even consider ourselves changed people from the year before. Oh, and some of us are covered in sparkles. We vow to work out more, eat less sugar, maybe even quit an addiction. These vows are wonderful in concept and we usually stick to them for about a week. Even if there's a spreadsheet plan and diagram for your goals you can still fall through the cracks.
On the other hand, sparkles can last a lot longer. If someone you know had on a sparkly outfit on New Year's, odds are that you will still find the glitter behind seat cushions. Or even have a sparkle fall out of your dog's fur one day. They are obnoxious and a pain in the butt to clean up, but man are they committed to their job.
If you think of sparkles as a mini worker they really do their job well. Sure, they might fall off of your outfit every five seconds, but they sure can stick to everything else. For at least a month after you wear that glittery jacket or dress they will remind you of their presence. "Look at me!" they say, as you scoff and try to lint roll them off of your couch. "We stuck this long!" It's quite amazing when you think about it.
What if we tried to make our resolutions stick like the sparkles that we pull out of our ears after the New Year? Imagine it. Hopefully, they wouldn't be as obnoxious as gold specks, but picture it in your mind. The goals are so straight forward, the plans and backup plans so perfect, that the resolution actually sticks. If that were to happen just until February begins you might be able to start good habits that will lead to you accomplishing your goals. If you think about it, this is the best that can come out of a New Year's resolution.
When you start writing your resolutions down this New Year, take a serious look at what you want to improve and what you know that you'll work to accomplish. These resolutions can be turned into mini goals that can be done. If you ever get stressed or frustrated, just imagine yourself as a little sparkle. You're a sparkle riding out the wave of hard times and sticking around for the good to start.
Hold onto that determination and who knows what you can accomplish.
