Today, the younger generation in society appears more accepting, in regards to differences, than generations past. This enables all kinds of people to proudly express their individuality. Over the past few years, a lot of people have opened up publicly about their specific types of diversions from stereotypical "normalcy." A few examples include gay, transgender, and a new concept of identity, the gender fluid community.
Recently, the gay community fought for equal marriage rights. Many states had already implemented same-sex marriages as being legal, but 13 states banned the practice. On June 26, however, the Supreme Court ruled same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states.
In the past, many people had to hide their homosexual feelings to avoid total rejection from society. Today there are more and more people who accept the gay community. Some people may not agree with the gay community, but they respect their right to decide how to live their own lives.
The transgender community is becoming more well-known today. A couple of celebrities have shed light on the unfamiliar topic. Laverne Cox from "Orange is the New Black" and the Olympic athlete Caitlyn Jenner both felt different from the gender they were born into. They decided they needed do live their lives in the gender they felt in the hearts and minds. They both felt more comfortable in their own skin living their lives as women. These two women, along with the rest of the transgender community, are teaching the rest of the world about struggles many people have to hide.
It is a time for people to feel more comfortable about openly discussing identity. More and more people are open to discussing and accepting these communities.
Gender fluidity has recently surfaced. Certain people don't identify as a male or female, but simply as a person. They believe they posses aspects of both men and women. Two celebrities have recently identified themselves as gender fluid: Ruby Rose from "Orange is the New Black" and performer Miley Cyrus. Both celebrities didn't want to be put into specific categories regarding gender. They felt that there wasn't a box they fully fit into.
Many people are embracing the new idea of gender and applaud the two stars for sharing their feelings about a relatively unknown topic.
There are people that live in today's society that still do not agree with or support these communities. However, there are growing numbers of people who respect them enough to allow and help their voices to be heard. The younger generations embrace change, individuality and the right to true happiness.
