I love Urban Outfitters. I've been shopping there for years. They are known for having plain white t-shirts for $89, but their sale is awesome. As a loyal customer of Urban Outfitters, I am shocked about the media rampage going on regarding Kent State University and it's tragedy 44 years ago.
In 1970, four students were killed and nine others were wounded at Kent State University, it what became known known the May 4th Massacre. The shooters were the Ohio National Guard during to student protest against the U.S. war in Vietnam war. It was a tragedy in 1970 and no one who suffered through it the first time should have to relive this experience because of Urban Outfitters $129 vintage sweatshirt.
The media has slammed them full force. Urban Outfitters has publicly apologized and claims that they had no intention of relating this sweatshirt to the Kent State University shooting, claiming that the discoloration of red on the sweatshirt is a line of their sun-faded vintage collection. Coincidence? I think not. Clearly this was a poorly executed vintage collection item on Urban Outfitters end. To be honest, this would not have been a controversy or public relations scandal if the color of the vintage sweatshirt were any other color other than blood red. It is hard to perceive this sweatshirt in any other way than negative. It has to be extremely hurtful to those effected by the Kent State University shooting.
This wasn't the first controversy Urban Outfitters has had with their clothing either. At the beginning of September, actress Sophia Bush, from One Tree Hill, decided to declare war on Urban Outfitters for a shirt they designed that said "Eat Less" on the front. Sophia Bush confronted Urban Outfitters, saying they should issue a public apology and donate money to a women's organizations for eating disorders. She states, "It's like handing a suicidal person a loaded gun, you should know better."
Urban Outfitters needs to closely monitor what they are promoting or they will lose business fast. With celebrities and the news media catching on to these hurtful and inappropriate clothing items, it will affect Urban Outfitter's sales. Sophia Bush has announced a boycott.
Urban Outfitters needs to get it's act together!Â
