Uber For Everything

In an article recently published by Forbes (http://goo.gl/SCIfZ9), five teenagers were given some spotlight for their new application called Push For Pizza. It works like Uber, which is gaining traction in major cities as a cheap alternative to a taxi at the push of a button. Push For Pizza knows where you are, which pizza places are closest to you, and your debit card information. All you have to do is press the "pizza button" and one will be delivered to you by whichever pizza place sees your order first. No checkout process, no delivery. A Push for Pizza driver will pick your pizza up and deliver it to you. Press a button, and pizza appears. What an interesting concept.

Interesting, yes, but what does this mean for the future? I'm not an expert on application development, but it seemed easy enough to transfer the concept that Uber did so well with into pizza delivery. Why can't it be transferred into any other kind of delivery service? Soon there will be a button for everything. We'll have menus of things for people to fill up their virtual shopping carts. Then, they'll press the button, and drivers will make trips to all the different stores to fill the order. After that, everything you ordered: a new bottle of dish soap, a couple pairs of socks, a clean shower loofa, a fresh tube of tooth paste. What if we never have to leave our homes for anything, again?

At Purdue, Hungry Boiler has come pretty close to making the food options here reachable from the couch. Their drivers do receive an order via text message, go to the restaurant it came from, pick up the order that corresponds to the name given in their text message, and deliver it to whoever placed the order. But, there are limitations. There are minimum order prices for the delivery options, long checkout processes and such. I picture an application with a button for each restaurant that, when pressed, will place an order for delivery of your favorite menu item. If I want Jimmy John's, I'll push their button and a Hunter's Club, no tomato on wheat bread will show up at my door. No phone calls, no check out, just one button and a sandwich in my belly.

I think it's only a matter of time before we start seeing "Uber-like" applications for other things. Once one restaurant started offering online ordering and the ability to skip the line, just about everyone else followed suit. Who do you think should start delivering? Tell me what you think on Twitter @dillonhavens, and make sure you check out other great articles by other Purdue Greeks on our website www.theodysseyonline.com.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
