Sweet Summertime

4

Everyone looks forward to summer, especially after being stressed out 24/7 throughout the school year. This winter was extremely annoying but, now, there are so many things to look forward to for summer 2014!Summer is right around the corner! There are so many things to look forward to for the three and half months we have away from school. It's almost summer. Each year seems to go by quicker and quicker. It's time for nonstop sunshine, sitting poolside, late nights, vacations, shorts and flip-flops, and concerts. Summer is either a time to relax after a year at school, study abroad, get back to work or go to summer school. Some people can't wait to be home, while others are trying to take a Maymester class to avoid leaving college. Here are some reasons why I think summer is the best, and long overdue.

1. The sun. After this long winter, I could use 80 to 90 degree weather.

2. Concerts. Whether you're into DMB, country stars or R&B, there's nothing like getting a group of friends together and sitting around listening to music.

3. Bonfires. Summer bonfires are the best. Hanging out with your friends on a cool summer night and lighting up a bonfire – nothing better.

4. The pool or lake. Or a beach, if you aren't from the midwest. I can't wait to lay out in the sun by the water and go jet-skiing and tubing. My favorite days are spent at the lake or by a pool, drink in hand.

5. The clothes! Shorts, bathing suits, sandals, tanks, sunglasses. Summer clothes is so much better than being bundled up in 3 layers, taking on the winter tundra.

I asked a few students what their favorite part of summer is. Here are some of the replies.

"Drinking a beer on the lake, more the beer part than the lake."

"Music festivals!"

"Going to the Indy 500 and not remembering it."

"Fourth of July."

"Three and a half months away from Purdue classes. Unless you are taking summer classes, it never ends."

"Lake x1000!"

"Moving back to Purdue."

"Riding kegs like mechanical bulls in my pool once they are empty."

"My above ground pool."

"Capri Sun!"

"My American flag bikini."

"Baseball season!"

"No homework!"

" Sleep."

"Reuniting with hometown friends."

"Laying out."

"The weird pool shirt that my mom makes me wear."

"Arnold Palmers."

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
