This is a weekly breakdown of our opponent, giving you all you need to know while watching the game this Saturday. DISCLAIMER: Some of this may actually be true.
Who: University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Where: Memorial Stadium; Lincoln, Nebraska
Mascot: Cornhuskers. This is the part of the column where I usually make fun of the other team for their mascot. But do I really have to this week? I think they’re making fun of themselves enough. So I’ll take an opportunity to make fun of their former mascots. Nebraska had six different ones before they settled on the Huskers. The five others were the Hawkeyes, Antelopes, Old Gold Knights, Bugeaters, and Mankilling Mastodons. I don’t know how the last one didn’t stick.
Fun Fact: Nebraska’s football fans, the Sea of Red, are the self-proclaimed “Greatest Fans in College Football.” They also have the numbers to back it up, having sold out every home football game since 1962.
Notable Alumni: Johnny Carson (former host of the Tonight Show), Warren Buffet (Chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway), Gabrielle Union (Goddess), Joba Chamberlain (MLB Pitcher)
Series Record: 1-1. Nebraska won 44-7 last year. Purdue won 28-0 in 1958.
What to Watch For: Grab the beverage of your choosing and watch for the following occurrences: Nebraska play over 30 yards: 1 drink. Purdue play over 10 yards: 1 drink. Nebraska Turnover: 3 drinks. Purdue turnover: 1 drink. Shot of a Nebraska student not wearing red: 5 drinks. Shot a happy Purdue fan: Chug.
Game Breakdown: Nebraska is rolling this season, having one heartbreaking loss to Michigan State in front of a national audience. They have handled every opponent fairly well this year on the back of their senior running back Ameer Abdullah. This will be another difficult test for the Boilers, as I expect to fall short once again, 35-14.
Next Week: vs. Wisconsin
