Volunteering is a good way to give back to the community. I was at Petsmart the other day and a lady came in saying that a puppy had been abandoned in the parking lot and Petsmart wouldn't take in any stray animals.
I volunteered to take it to the humane society because it needed vaccines, food, and water. I've volunteered at the Almost Home Humane Society for over a year now and it has been such a rewarding experience.
One of my passions is finding animals good homes. I love volunteering at the animal shelter because the animals need love and attention. There are way too many strays and not enough adoptions. My goal is to continuously promote Almost Home Humane Society and help get these wonderful animals get great homes!Â
I know it's difficult to adopt in West Lafayette because it is a college town. This means that dorms don't allow pets, sororities and fraternities have their own rules about having pets, and not all apartments allow pets without a fee. But there are ways to help other than just adopting. Almost Home Humane Society needs help in any possible way. You can volunteer to help at the shelter or give a donation on their website. They need people to help give food and water to the animals, clean out the cages, walk the dogs, and give attention to the cats. They also need volunteers to help socialize these animals and help their chances of adoption. Almost Home Humane Society walks dogs that are up for adoption around campus. Thus far in 2014, Almost Home Humane Society has successfully gone through 943 adoptions.Â
Almost Home takes in ALL strays regardless of condition, age, or adoptability. They need help through positions such as kennel assistants, socializers, and adoption helpers. It is a great volunteer opportunity for all students at Purdue!Â
