Ten Unwritten Rules of Attending PSU Football Games

To be a dedicated Penn State football fan, there are ten unwritten rules that should be followed while cheering the Nittany Lions on in the stands of Beaver Stadium.

Whether you realize it or not, you probably already respect most traditions that are expected by fans in the stands. Football season will be here before we know it. Make sure to remember these guidelines when you are cheering on the Nittany Lions:

1. There is no sitting in the student section. No matter how badly you want to sit, don’t! Every student stands during the game. When halftime comes, you are encouraged to sit and rest your legs while watching the Blue Band perform on the field.

2. Sing along. When the Alma Mater is on, sing along. The words are even on the scoreboard so you can’t use the excuse that you don't know the words. Also make sure to sway back and forth with whoever is to your left and right.

3. Don’t leave early. It is sometimes tempting to want to leave a game early, especially if we are losing. However, the players don’t just walk off the field because they are tired halfway through the third quarter. Stay the whole time. Being able to say you attend Penn State football games is such an honor, so why not make the most of it and stay the entire time?

4. Wear Penn State gear. On game day, it is essential to wear Penn State gear. Don’t worry about dressing up for games. Just throw on a PSU tee and you're good to go. Don't be afraid to add a hat, hair bow, or even face paint.

5. Cheer loudly. Beaver Stadium has been known to shake when the volume inside gets high. It’s an unreal feeling. Make sure to cheer loud and often to show your support for the Nittany Lions out there on the field!

6. Be supportive of the players. These players have been through a lot. They stuck by the program during a difficult time. Younger players are the future of the program. Showing support for the football players that go out there on Saturdays will give them even more of a reason to shine.

7. If it’s a Whiteout game, wear white. Don’t be that fan that wears red to the Whiteout game against Ohio State! This year the Whiteout game will be played against one of our rivals. Show as much support as possible by wearing head-to-toe white.

8. Pay attention. When we are on defense, don’t accidentally cheer for the other team when they get a first down - fans around you will not be happy. Pay attention to the action and make sure you know whether we are on offense or defense.

9. Don’t show up too drunk to function. Tailgating before a football game is always fun, but do not overdo it. Fans that are obnoxiously drunk are not fun to be around. Don’t be that guy.

10. WE ARE! Make the most of your time as a Penn State student. Cheer on the football team at the home games and cherish every moment of your experience.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
