10 Things that You Can Do Once You Turn 21

For the past 20 years and 364 days, I've been unable to legally enjoy a beer. But, who cares? Everyone always focuses on the "getting wasted" portion of turning 21 years old. I, however, know that on midnight on my 21st birthday, many other doors opened for me. Here are a few things that I plan to do now that I have reached the big 2-1. Who needs alcohol anyways?

1. Get a horizontal driver's license in New Jersey.

Gain the horizontal license, gain the respect of your peers.

2. Get an pilot's license for an airplane, helicopter, or gyroplane in England.

Do I know what a gyroplane is? No. Do I want to fly one? Yes.

3. Gamble in Iowa.

I hear Cedar Rapids is the gambling capital of the world.

4. Get married without my parents' consent in Mississippi.

Therefore, I can now legally marry someone from Mississippi.

5. Obtain a concealed weapons permit.


Finally! I can properly protect myself!

6. Legally possess one ounce of marijuana in Colorado.

I can listen to Wiz Khalifa's music without feeling like a poser!

7. Apply to adopt a child in the U.K.

What's better than a baby? A British baby.

8. Supervise a learning driver.

Legally risk your life as your irresponsible younger sibling learns to drive.

9. Be charged as an adult.

You can face a longer sentence after you abuse your right to consume alcohol and marijuana.

10. Legally enjoy A LOT of beers.

Let's face it, all you really want to do when you're 21 is get drunk. Enjoy!!!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
