2015 is quickly coming to an end and 2016 is just around the corner. As we prepare for the new year, it is important to look back and reflect on the events that have defined 2015. Here are 14 events that have made 2015 a historic year.

1. January 7 -- Charlie Hebdo Shooting

The French satirical magazine's headquarters in Paris, France, were attacked by two masked gunmen. The siege lasted three days and resulted in 17 dead.

2. January 18 -- Deflategate

In the Colts vs. Patriots AFC Championship game, it was discovered that some of the balls were deflated. The issue lasted for most of the year eventually ending with Tom Brady, the Patriots quarterback, receiving a 4-game suspension by the NFL that a Federal judge overruled.

3. May 4 -- Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana is born

The Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to the newest member of the royal family and Prince George gained a beautiful baby sister.

4. June 16 -- Donald Trump announces his candidacy for President

Donald Trump decided to throw his hat in with the rest of the Republican candidates. Coining the slogan "Make America Great Again" he has become the center of attention.

5. June 26 -- Legalization of same-sex marriage in America

The Supreme Court legalized gay marriage nationwide with a vote of 5-4.

6. July 5 -- U.S. Woman's soccer team wins the FIFA Women's World Cup

The U.S defeated Japan 5-2 in the finals in Vancouver, Canada. With this record breaking win America became the first country to ever win three Woman's World Cups.

7. July 10 -- Confederate flag is removed from outside South Carolina State House

After 54 years outside the state house, the Confederate flag was removed after the Charleston, SC shooting. Several protests, including one woman actually climbing the flag pole, initiated the removal.

8. July 14 -- The New Horizons spacecraft take pictures of Pluto

The New Horizons spacecraft made its closest approach to the dwarf-planet Pluto and provided the first images of its icy surface.

9. October 21 -- "Back to the Future" Day

This is the day that Marty McFly and Doc travel to in the original "Back to the Future." However, the current generation has a lot of catching up to do to the technology presented in the movie's version of 2015.

10. October 22 -- Adele's "Hello" is released

After a four-year break, Adele finally released another album. The "Hello" single was an instant hit with 20.4 million streams its first week, demolishing the previous record of 10.1 million.

11. November 13 -- Paris Attacks


On this historic day ISIS attacked several area across the France's Capitol, including the Bataclan Concert Hall.The total of all the attacks resulted in 130 dead and 368 wounded.

12. November 30- Kobe Bryant announces retirement

After 20 years playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe Bryant announced that he would retire at the end of the season. Bryant will be remembered as one of the best basketball players of all time.

13. December 18 -- "Star Wars: The Force Awakens"

The greatly anticipated newest installment of the Star Wars Saga smashed pre-sale records and was an instant hit bringing in 238 million dollars its opening weekend.

14. December 22 -- SpaceX Rocket landing

This historic upright landing of the SpaceX rocket in Cape Canaveral, Florida will change the space industry. This amazing feat is comparable to throwing a pencil over the Eiffel Tower and it landing upright on the other side.

While 2015 was certainly eventful, we should look forward to the exciting adventures awaiting us in the new year!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
