Not to be a hipster, but I love criticizing songs on the radio. Mostly because I don't really listen to them. But also because there are some songs that make very little sense if you just listen to the words and not what is being said. Casual listening usually goes like that. You hear the lyrics but most people don't pick up on the real message of the song. I know about metaphors and similes, but it's just fun to be sarcastic. Without further ado, here are some songs that raise questions in my mind.
1. "Milkshake" by Kelis.
"My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard, and they're like 'It's better than yours.' Damn right, it's better than yours. I could teach you but I'd have to charge."
What kind of milkshake is she talking about? Why does it bring the boys to the yard?
2. "Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran.
"And darling, I'll be loving you 'til we're 70."
So what happens to Ed Sheeran's love when he's 71? 100? Do they just end their relationship at 70?
3. "Happy" by Pharrell Williams.
"Because I'm happy. Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof."
A room without a roof sounds like you're lacking something major in your life. It sounds like an unfinished room to me. I wouldn't be happy if I was missing something that major in my life.
4. "That's What Makes You Beautiful" by One Direction.
"You don't know you're beautiful. That's what makes you beautiful."
So if One Direction is telling this girl that she's beautiful, that means she now knows she's beautiful. Since her not knowing made her beautiful, is she now ugly because she knows?
5. "Let Me Love You" by Ne-Yo.
"Girl let me love you, and I will love you until you learn to love yourself."
Similar to Ed Sheeran's line. What happens after she learns to love herself? Is Ne-Yo's relationship done with then? And if she learns to love herself and then you leave her, wouldn't that just tear her self-esteem right back down? We would be back to square one.
6. "Human" by The Killers.
"Are we human? Or are we dancer?"
Well I'm pretty sure I'm a human. Mostly certain. But how would "we" be a singular dancer? He doesn't ask if we're dancers, just dancer. If all of humankind merged into one dancer, that would be a terrible dancer...
7. "Love Story" by Taylor Swift.
"Cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter. And my daddy said stay away from Juliet."
Taylor Swift being a scarlet letter can mean one of two things: 1. she is just one of the girls on the side for her Romeo or 2. she has committed adultery in the past. This can have two outcomes: he doesn't want his daughter to just be a side hoe or he doesn't want Romeo to get his heart broken by his cheating daughter. Either way, I think it sounds like the dad is being a voice of reason and holding to high morals here.
BONUS: "Mambo No. 5" by Lou Bega.
I understand the lyrics here, but I included this as a bonus for everyone to ponder. Where are Mambos 1-4? I want to hear them. I need to know if they all connect! But alas, we only have a "Mambo No. 5."
