Having worked since I was 15, I have seen my fair share of fast food, retail and restaurant jobs. From being a customer service representative at Domino's, to a fit stylist for Athleta, I have juggled work, school and extra curricular activities for some time. However, I never had a guide to tell me the best places to work and benefits involved.
If you are a college student, you are more than likely living on a tight budget and time is limited. Having a part-time job is a great way to put cash right in your wallet, improving your lifestyle and preparing you for the real world after you graduate (that is, if you can find a job). Some of the best jobs are right on campus, catering to your every need. However, with the right amount of researching and Glassdoor reviews, you can discover some awesome job opportunities right at home on your computer.
Babysitter/Nanny
This should be a given but many families are willing to pay between 10-20 dollars per hour for a babysitter. If you can, it's always beneficial to lock down a consistent job (nanny) where you have the same hours each week. If the kids are old enough to be independent and work on homework after school, you can multi-task by bringing your own things to do. Not having to worry about paying taxes or dressing in uniform makes babysitting job truly worth it. If interested, sign up with Care.com and find families near you!
Fitness Instructor/Gym Assistant
After that case of beer last weekend, you could use a part-time fitness job, motivating you to stay in shape and encouraging others to do the same. Working in either a local gym or the one on campus will provide a fun, hype atmosphere with awesome perks including free classes. You can take on a position as an instructor, assistant, desk clerk, maintenance, etc.
Campus Tour Guide
If you are great with people and passionate about your school, this job might be right down your alley. Some colleges may not offer pay but if you are fortunate enough to go to one that does, you have to take advantage. Being a campus tour guide requires the right sense of direction, a strong personality and knowledge of the campus grounds. Most campuses allow you to schedule your own availability with tours and offer flexibility during exam weeks and poor weather conditions. (It looks great on your resume too!)
Tutor
Are you passionate about a specific subject? Do you like teaching people? If you can find a way to make cash, tutoring is a great part-time job. Setting an hourly rate and meeting with multiple students on your time is a true win! Some campuses may offer an tutoring program in which you can apply where the school pays you for serving others. Remember, you do not have to limit yourself to students that are your same age. There are many resource centers that are looking for college students that can help younger kids with SAT/ACT tips and grade school assignments!
Server
If you can handle a fast-paced environment and juggle multiple things at once, this is the job for you. The important thing about being a server is finding the right restaurant in which to work. Fine dining establishments will get you the high tips and can total your earnings at around $150 on a weekend night. Not only can you make great money, but you will gain customer experience skills and will learn to work well under pressure!
