9 Signs You Grew Up In Warren, Michigan

You can never change where you grew up. It’s a place where you can look back and cry, laugh, or just cringe at all the memories. Warren, Michigan may not be the most well-known Metro-Detroit suburb, but it is home to so many amazing, funny, down-to-earth people. It’s a huge suburb, so a few things on this list may be specific to where I grew up in Warren (12 and Dequindre, what’s good?), but some of this list will definitely hit home with all Warreners.

1. You went to National Coney Island after football/basketball games, nights out, and basically any extracurricular activity.

2. You also know National's is the only relevant Coney Island (sorry, Leo’s). But yeah, if you know what a Hani is, then you definitely grew up in Warren.

3. You know who this man is:

4. High school football was everything. And I mean everything. You’d go over to your friends’ houses to get ready even though you already knew what you were going to wear. Let me guess: bandana, leggings or jeans, Uggs, school hoodie and fleece NorthFace.

5. Regardless of what high school you went to in Warren, you always resented DLS and Regina. And if you went to Warren Mott, then you definitely remember the DLS v. Mott game of 2011 where one notorious DLS student called the girls of WMHS walruses on Facebook. #neverforget

6. The strip mall on 12 Mile and Mound was always lit on the weekends. Qdoba, Menchie's and Five Guys Burgers all in one place? Oh, and Starbucks and Buffalo Wild Wings next door? Count me in.

7. However, because it was always so lit, you could never go without seeing someone you know.

8. You freaked out when Eminem’s song W.T.P. mentioned Warren.

.

9. You also freak out whenever you tell someone that you’re from Warren and they don’t know where it is. Like, excuse me, it’s only the biggest city in Macomb County and third largest city in Michigan after Detroit and Grand Rapids. UGH.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
