Like so many other socially awkward people, going out requires a lot of energy. It is something we do, even something we do a lot. You always hear how parties are a great place to meet new people and to de-stress after a hard week of school. Maybe for some people, but for the socially awkward people of the world, going out can be just as stressful. Sometimes, the awkwardness is easy to outwardly cover up. However, internally, the awkwardness is never ending. That is why, at parties, I find myself wondering these 10 things:
1. Why are there so many people?
OK, I know I voluntarily showed up to a party, but seriously, how many people do you really think you can cram into one place? How am I supposed to avoid people when they have me surrounded?
2. How do you dance?
Unless you want to see what it would look like if a giraffe was having muscle spasms, I'll just stand over here in the corner.
3. How do you flirt?
Simply getting a word out without spitting on the other person or dropping something is considered an accomplishment.
4. Is there a bathroom in this place?
For the socially awkward, the bathroom at a party is a safe place, a home base, where we can just lock ourselves away and be by ourselves for just a few moments.
5. Where did my friends go?
At least when they were around, the social awkwardness is at a minimum. But when they leave you open and vulnerable to potential new interactions with strangers, the anxiety is REAL.
6. What do I do when a cute guy makes eye contact?
Just act natural. Wait, what is natural? What does my face usually look like? What do I do with my hands?
7. Where is the food?
When you don't know what to do with yourself, the hunt for food begins. Having food in your mouth is the perfect excuse to not have to talk to anyone.
8. Why is there Gatorade at a party?
Do not be fooled into thinking everybody is concerned about replenishing their electrolytes. However, some apple juice would be clutch right now.
9. Where do I put my coat?
I don't want it to get stolen...but it's too hot to wear it. Tying it around my waist is cool right? No? Oh well.
10. When can I leave?
Hey this has been fun and all, but I would much rather be at home in pajamas.
In the end, no matter how socially awkward you might feel, it is still possible to go out and have a good time. Find friends that embrace your awkwardness and never let them go. Dance like no-one is watching and rehearse your "hellos" in the mirror.
You've got this.
