Summer 2014

11

The hottest trends on what to wear and how to wear it.

After some online shopping and web surfing, I stumbled upon the hottest trends for the summer. If you’re one of those gals who enjoy staying up to date on fashion, check out these trends and go to the mall!

Floral

I know, I know, it seems like the obvious summer pattern/print, but floral is huge right now. When you go shopping, look for a floral top, skirt, romper, or pant that is a bold color and that make a statement. If you go to www.forever21.com and type in “floral” in the search bar, an array of floral clothing and accessories will pop up. Check it out.

Embellishments

Gems, jewels, and beads are making a comeback this summer in clothing and footwear. I know the thought of wearing a bedazzled top is somewhat aggressive, but look for pieces that aren’t over the top. Add some shimmer and shine to your summer wardrobe for a more glammed up look. Nordstrom has a wide selection of embellished sandals.

Cut Outs/Backless

Okay, let’s get straight to it. Cut outs must be done tastefully if you want to look chic, cute, and classy. One wrong cut out and you’re doomed! You have to choose a top or dress with a cut out that suits your body and one that you feel comfortable in. On the other hand, backless tops and dresses are my absolute favorite trend right now. Exposing the back is a sexy new trend, and a nice switch up from the plunging neckline—it’s rather refreshing! If you’re looking for something with cut outs or a little backless dress, check out www.lulus.com.

Bright and Bold Handbags

If you read my bio that I wrote for my Odyssey profile, you will find that I enjoy browsing for handbags! Handbags are my one true love and I am always super excited to discover the latest trends. This summer, bright and bold handbags are very “in.” I know it always seems more logical to purchase a handbag in brown, tan, or black, but branch out this summer and try a pop of color! I promise you’ll get tons of compliments on a bright bag because it grabs the attention of those around you, and you’ll find yourself wanting to carry your statement bag every day! If you’re willing to spend some money, Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors never disappoint in the color category. Also, the old reliable TJ Maxx is a great place to look for a new bag.

Cat Eye Sunglasses

Cat eye sunglasses are a fierce summer 2014 trend. I have always wanted a pair, but just haven’t gotten around to purchasing any. Since they’re the hot summer trend, maybe I’ll have to go get some now! The cat eye style will make you look like you hopped out of a movie from the 50’s, and give you some extra flare this summer. This vintage look is adorable in the classic black, brown, and even white if you’re feeling a little crazy! Urban Outfitters, C. Wonder, and Target all have affordable cat eye sunglasses for you to sport this summer.

Now that you know a few popular summer trends, grab a friend and head to the mall! If you’re like me and don’t live near a mall, bust out your credit card and start online shopping! If you follow these summer trends, you’ll steal the spotlight wherever you go. Happy shopping!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
