Guy, packing sucks.

20 Stages of Packing for a Semester Abroad

It’s finally that time of year, the day you planned and waited for. You’re leaving in less than two days to spend a whirlwind semester abroad traveling the world and living it up. If you’re a procrastinator (or normal), you probably still haven’t started packing. Here are the 20 things that happen as you try to cram your life into two suitcases.

  1. Suddenly it hits you. You’re leaving to go abroad in less than 48 hours and you have yet to pack.
  2. In a frenzied panic you charge up the stairs and start throwing things out of your drawers and on to the floor.
  3. You realize it would be much more efficient if you had something to store your clothing and other necessities in so you start to look for your suitcases.
  4. You yell down from your room begging your mom to help you find the biggest suitcases your family owns in your basement.
  5. After yelling to no avail, you charge down stairs to find them yourself.
  6. Once you look at the luggage collection in your basement, you realize that you will have to severely trim down your packing list in order to have any hope of bringing back souvenirs.
  7. You get distracted as soon as your phone dings and spend 20 minutes texting, surfing Instagram and snapchatting your friends pictures with the caption “packing sux :(”
  8. You look at the time and realize you have not been productive at all and start to panic, resolving to get your life together.
  9. Start playing your pump up playlist so that you are motivated to actually pack.
  10. Curl up in the fetal position and curse yourself for not starting to pack sooner.
  11. Wander downstairs and beg your mom to please help you because “you seriously can’t even.”
  12. Tear your room apart trying to find your favorite shirt/dress/pants only to realize it has already been tossed into your suitcases (obviously).
  13. Start to make progress only to realize that you need to figure out how to incorporate clothes for all seasons into two suitcases.
  14. Start texting every person you’ve ever known who has gone abroad to steal their packing wisdom.
  15. Rejoice as you pick out your favorite baiting suit and realize you’ll be in the sunshine way before your friends in Oxford.
  16. Start to imagine all the magical experiences you’ll have in your favorite clothes and feel immensely better about your outfit choices.
  17. Just as you are about to close up your suitcase, you remember you totally forgot to add all the outerwear you need.
  18. Sit on your suitcase so that your mom can zip your suitcase closed and feel total joy when she FINALLY gets it to close.
  19. Feel like the most accomplished person in the entire world after doing something you should have done days ago.
  20. Remember you have a carry on to think about and begin the whole process all over again.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
