20 Reasons To Throw What U Know

Things you know (or must know) if you go to the University of Miami.

Everyone knows it's all about the U. Here are 20 things you know if you have already been to UM, and if you haven't, these are things you will find out very shortly.

1. You will most likely see something interesting happening on campus while walking to class- people tightrope walking near the trees on the way to Dooley, demonstrations by Chartie’s employees at the entrance to school, the Farmer’s Market every Wednesday, etc.

2. If you live in the dorms, you will be randomly woken up by announcements on the speakers, your RA will often ask you to quiet down, and your room inspection will probably result in a $75 fine for having something hanging on your fire detector.

3. On a beautiful day (so basically always), many students skip class(es) to go to the pool, the beach, on a boat… essentially a mental health day.

4. Lime’s playlists are ALWAYS on point.  Especially after football games.

5. You can never step on the gold seal in front of the bookstore – if you do, legend has it you will fail out of school (which is why they block if off during midterms and finals).

6. You know the Starbucks at the SAC is ten times better than the one by Richter.  It’s much less claustrophobic and the employees are a lot nicer.

7. The Rat is where it’s at.  Always.  Walk-by’s after class are recommended; chances are you will find a group of friends to hang out with there.

8. Getting your first pitcher #attherat is necessary on everyone’s 21st birthday.

9. At least one 4 a.m. fire drill/actual fire will happen every year at the freshman dorms.

10. Moe’s can be the best place to be or the worst place to be.  If the line reaches Lulu In The Grove – STAY AWAY.

11. Except for Tuesdays, which is karaoke night.  Then it might be worth it.

12. New York Pizza (AKA Grove Pizza) is a must, and is also usually where you find your friends to take cabs home with after being separated.

13. Monty’s is the place to be for happy hour on Fridays.

14. Tailgate season is the best season.  Don’t miss a game unless it’s absolutely necessary.

15. You MUST preorder online for Chipotle… unless you feel like standing in line for an hour.

16. If you’re a girl – you need to find someone with a boat and make them take you out on it.  If you’re a guy – you need to buy a boat.

17. Each of these is a must at least once in your college career: Ultra, the FSU-Miami away game, Mardi Gras in New Orleans, and sometimes (depending on your toleration for ratchetness) spring break in Panama City Beach.

18. All of your friends tell you they want to come visit, and many end up coming. Even when you don’t want them to.

19. You make the best friends of your life during your time at Miami.

20. You never want to leave, because it really is all about the U.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
