It's normal to have expectations. Everybody has them, whether it's an expectation of how your night out will turn out, how a conversation will go, or how your summer will be. Unfortunately, the reality is that for the most part, things don't work out how you expect them to. A prime example of this is summer vacation. As the school year drew to a close, you couldn't help but get excited about all the amazing things that were going to happen to you this summer. Now that it's nearly halfway through summer, it's time to reflect on some of the major expectations vs. realities you face this summer.
Fitness
Expectation:
After a year of late night binge eating, a large consumption of calorie filled alcohol and the consistent decision to avoid the gym at all costs, you probably packed on a few pounds. The summer is your time to reopen your gym membership, work out every day, and eat healthier without the temptations of late night pizza and cookies. You're so ready to get back to your bikini body.
Reality:
Sure you probably paid to reopen your gym membership, but did you actually go? Maybe two or three times? And the whole eating healthier thing kind of failed when you realized you needed to eat at all of your favorite restaurants that you missed while you were away. Oh and about that bikini body, there's always next year?
Relationships
Expectations:
After the countless random hookups at school, you were ready for a new summer fling. A fling that you would secretly hope would turn into something more. Maybe your even ready to reunite with your high school fling?
Reality:
Turns out finding a summer fling can be a little more difficult than expected, especially when you rarely leave the house enough to actually meet someone. Oh and your high school fling? He has a girlfriend now.
Sleep
Expectation:
Let's be real, after getting practically no sleep all year, especially towards the end of the semester, you couldn't wait to climb into your bed at home and sleep for days.
Reality:
You probably got a few good nights of sleep the first couple of nights after you got home, but after that it was back to binge-watching Netflix until suddenly it's 4:00 a.m. And then when you got that job that required you to be up at 7:00 a.m., your expectations of sleeping till noon went out the window.
Adventure
Expectation:
Throughout the year you constantly made plans with your home friends about all the exciting things you were going to do this summer. Camping, amusement parks and concerts were all at the top of your list.
Reality:
Now that you're becoming an adult you have actual responsibilities, making it a lot harder to go off on adventures whenever you want. The reality is you and most of your friends have jobs and can never all be free at the same time to go away for even a weekend.
Although it can be upsetting when things don't work out the way we expect them to, sometimes things can work out even better. Everything happens for a reason!
