When I came to Marquette University, I was unsure of which clubs I would join. Sure, there was O-Fest the first week school commenced in order to make you aware of your options, but let's be honest, it's a little overwhelming. I’m here to advocate for one club that is worth joining--the Marquette University Television (MUTV) program.

1. Different positions for different people

You think TV and you automatically assume you have to read lines in front of the camera, right? Well, that is not the case, whatsoever. MUTV allows you to be both in front and behind the camera. It all depends on what you feel most comfortable with, and you also have the option to switch up your preference every week.

2. A great way to build confidence

Are you one of those people who gets nervous talking in front of a large crowd? I sure am! I wouldn’t say joining MUTV completely got rid of that nervousness, but it sure helped. What better way to build up your confidence than going on live television and telling fellow Marquette students the latest breaking news, Hollywood gossip or sports recap.

3. Learn something new every day

Joining MUTV allows you the opportunity to learn a variety of things whether it's working a teleprompter, or a control board. And that’s only behind-the-scenes stuff. If you are one of those brave souls that volunteers to go on-air, then you’ll learn how to write attention-grabbing stories,
and how to present stories in a unique way.

4.Make friends

MUTV requires there to be numerous volunteers on any given day, Monday through Thursday. This means you have the opportunity to make a new friend every day. If you are getting tired of hanging out with the same ol' group, then join MUTV and you're sure to make friends instantly.

5. Something to add to your resume

When it comes down to it, while in college, you need to have a balance of going out with friends and finding things to add to your resume. Is there anything better to add than "a committed volunteer for the MUTV program?" I think not. Not only can you volunteer, there is also room for growth. You have the opportunity to apply for paid or school credit positions such as "General Manger," "Television Producer," or the "Production Director."
