Can't thank you enough for this half-decade.

An Open Letter To One Direction

Dear One Direction,

This is harder to write than I thought it be.

You see, I haven’t been here since the start. In no way was I the kid who watched you walk onto the "X-Factor" stage for the first time, singing your hearts out auditioning for a spot on the show. Nor was I the one who rooted for you when you were paired up as a group in the middle of the show and ended up in third place. Barely even knew you when you created "What Makes You Beautiful," the anthem to this fandom.

I may not have been here since day one but I intend to be here until day none.

In 2012, I made the mistake of hearing a little about you and Googling One Direction. Indeed, I spent that night YouTubing all the compilationS of funny moments you’ve had since 2011; laying in bed till the sun rose, laughing my head off.

Soon after, I had memorized all your names and all the lyrics to your two albums "Up All Night" and "Take Me Home."

In 2013, I had created my fan account for you; tweeting song lyrics and catching up on the current news of you. At this time, I didn’t understand what it meant to be a part of this fandom. I was like the new fish swimming into something that seemed so great. And thankfully, it was.

Safe to say I found my current.

I remember my first of your concerts I attended like it happened yesterday. Everything going black and the crowd just erupting; all five of you jumping on stage and bringing the moment to life. Realizing that you’re not just a figment of our imaginations but a piece of us standing yards away belting out songs we’ve basically got tattooed inside us. No one can describe it with justice. Not even you can. It’s one of those “you have to be there” moments. That’s what makes others realize it’s that good.

It’s 2015 now and you’ve spent nearly half a decade creating music and making us smile. You’ve just dropped "Made In The AM" and the album is purely amazing. Your songwriting has started off good and has gotten even better, your vocals growing up with you. And I can’t say I’m surprised because we knew this album was going to be the best one yet.

And whether it debuts as number one after a week or not, I’ll still be proud. Year after year you’ve given us a new album, sharpening up your skills and jumping to the writing board for the next hit song. Not many fans out there can say that their favorites have toured year after year since the beginning for them, creating music every few months to enjoy.

However, we can, and with that I’m forever thankful. You’ve taught us that it’s not about the money but merely about the moments; creating them and enjoying them. We’ve grown up with you. You’ve grown up with us. And as much as we wish things were as chill as they were back then, the only drama being simple funny stuff, we’ve still managed through all the craziness today.

We’ve gone through a lot. Losing Zayn, fighting off the rumors that were completely false, and all those shenanigans I'd rather not bring up again. Yet we still stand, tweeting our fingers off and freaking out when you recently sung "Torn" again last week.

Why, you may ask? Well, you’re there for us like we are for you. As Louis puts it in the "This Is Us"
movie, “This is a teamwork between us and them.”

Might I say, we make an epic team.

From funny interviews to strange performance/car commercials to the life-changing concerts, thank you for providing us with this much entertainment. And better yet, a second home. Because what I’ve learned from you is that home is where you feel happy and content. It’s not just a roof and walls around you but a bunch of heartbeats enjoying the company of one another. It’s a family that I didn’t even know existed until I found you. Or might I say, you found me.

You never let fame change you. Instead, you changed fame.

You’re now on your way to taking a hiatus and as much as I’m going to miss the concert updates, thank you for leaving us with another album.

They may say you’re just another boy band but you aren’t. This album has proved to be much more than the bubblegum pop everyone expected. How you go from an upbeat dancing song called "Drag Me Down" to a tearjerker called "If I Could Fly" is beyond me but I love it.

Thank you for teaching me to live in the moment and have fun because life is short. And to take any chance (or chonce) we can get to make the best of it. Your random actions at concerts and ability to make any interview fun is what keeps us going.

You’ve saved people who didn’t even know they needed to be saved. And for that, we’ll always be right here. Thanks for helping us feel alive.

Enjoy your break because you deserve it. Whatever happens next, we’ll always be blessed with the great memories to remember.

Thanks for staying with us until the A.M.

Love Always,

@windycitynouis

P.S. Until 2017 you awesome human beings. Go have the adventure of a lifetime like you always do.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
