14 Signs You Grew Up On Chicago's East Side

Ever head of the East Side before? No? Trust me, that's no surprise. I had the sometimes enjoyable, but mostly annoying pleasure of living on the East Side for 18 years. Here are 14 key signs that you undeniably grew up on the East Side. (On a side note, if you know where the building in the article cover photo is located, then congratulations, you are a true East Sider!)

1. You know your ABCs, or rather you know Avenues B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, L, M, N and O.

2. GPS? No need. The East Side is particularly small, which means you'll know your way around by time you're in middle school.

3. You went to one of three grammar schools: George Washington Elementary, Jane Adams or Gallistel.

4. Rowan Park was your (and everyone's) hangout spot growing up.

5. Walking to The Plaza was one of two things to do with your friends.

6. You've walked every inch of the East Side, since everything is
in walking distance.

7. When you tell someone where you're from, you have to follow by saying, "It's by the border of Indiana," in order for people to understand.

8. The most excitement amongst East Side residents was the building of Wal-Mart. So long, long drives to River Oaks Mall.

9. The Annunciata Fest is THE summer festival of the East Side.

10. Capri's is your go-to for pizza. Heinies is your go-to for fried chicken. One never strays from these two options.

11. You inevitably know every route that avoids all the infamous bridges on the East Side. They always seem to be up when you have somewhere to be.

12. You always refer to George Washington High School as if you went there simply because it is the only high school in the area.

13. The reputation George Washington High School has leaves your parents with only one choice: shipping you off to a high school that just so happens to be 30-40 minutes away.

14. Everyone knows everyone. It is inevitable.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
