10 Signs Your Mom Is Your Best Friend

My mom is my best friend and I have no shame in admitting so. Some say the roles your parents play in your life should strictly be parents, not friends. However, I find that the farthest thing from the truth. Nobody knows me better than my mother and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Mostly because she’s stuck with me, but also due to the fact that she’s raised me from head to toe. My mom's the first to know something’s wrong and is constantly there to listen to me vent about life's latest struggles. So Mom, thank you for knowing me better than I know myself.

10 signs your mom is your best friend:

1. She's a mind reader.

It's seemingly telepathic. She knows something’s wrong before you even know something’s wrong. She’ll hear it in your voice before you even have time to cover it up.

2. You have no shame in your "ugly-cry game" in front of her.

My mom is by far the least judgmental person when it comes to releasing all possible bottled up emotions. Whether I'm bawling about getting my first speeding ticket or even if it's just my weekly life breakdown, she encourages me to go ahead and let it all out.

3. You still call her when you accidentally cut yourself.

Oh, the endless times I've done this. College has consisted of me buying nice, sharp knives with the intent of cooking nice, tasty dinners that soon ended with a nicely sliced finger. What do I do before I even think to run water over it and compress it? CALL MOM.

4. Time spent together could be lounging around for hours, and you're completely okay with that.

What's better than someone who can waste the day away with you and enjoy it as much as you do? We don't even have to say a word to each other and it seems as though we bonded. We just click and it's awesome.

5. She has no filter.

You want an honest opinion? Just ask Mom. I'll ask my roommate, boyfriend and friend if my outfit looks funny. Just in case I'm not getting an honest opinion from them, I always ask my mom. There's no such thing as "sugar-coating" with Mom around.

6. You've played the role of "mom" for her at some point.

That's the least I can do. My mom is my hero and I sometimes get caught up thinking heroes don't struggle, too. It hurts my heart to think of her heart hurting. I'll always be her shoulder to cry on just as much as she's been mine.

7. She's your biggest fan.

In the midst of a stressful week of school, I'll send my mom my weekly "I'm dropping out" text only to get a response that she would still unconditionally love me the same if I worked at Wendy's the rest of my life. She always reminds me that my happiness is her priority and I'm forever thankful for her selfless love.

8. She's always right.

Her gut instinct never fails. "I told you so" is the most redundant-yet-true phrase I've ever heard her say. I won't count on that changing, either.

9. She keeps up with every high and low in your life.

Unfortunately, drama's a real thing. Whether it's clichéd boy conflicts or useless drama among your friends, she listens. As foolish as a conflict may get, she'll still be there to talk you through it.

10. She loves you even when you find it hard to love yourself.

When it rains, it pours. We get caught up in life and kick ourselves for not sizing up. My mom will be there to remind me of the potential I have in anything I pursue even when I think I'm hitting rock bottom.

With that being said, thank you, Mom, for being my best friend and everything in between. I'm thankful to have a soul like yours that I can forever count on.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
