7 Types of Girls You’ll Meet During Sorority Recruitment

With sorority recruitment just around the corner for the ladies at University of Iowa, I wanted to give potential new members a sneak peek of what they are in for.

During these upcoming long (and hopefully not humid) weekends, you freshmen will meet a million and one different kinds of girls. Some will forever be just another face around campus, but some will become friends you don't know how you lived without for 18 years.

1. The legacies “My mom was a Chi O, my sister is a Theta, and my cousin’s boyfriend’s sister’s nephew was a Kappa, so I’m a little bit of everything.” Their sister might be in A Phi and their cousin might be a Tri Delt, but try not to listen to their opinions of what they think they know about every chapter on campus - decide for yourself.

2. The girl that doesn’t want to be there, but for some reason is “I’m so not a sorority girl.” She looks miserable. Because she is. Maybe she's here because her mom "thought it would be a good idea" or because she really did want to attempt something out of her comfort zone. Either way, I think it's all in the try. Props for giving it a shot, girlfriend.

3. The Rho Gamma kiss ass They seem kind of like the type that all the teachers loved in high school. Maybe I was really jealous because they all seemed to be really good at talking to everybody during recruitment, but I did always wonder if they knew that sucking up to the Rho Gamma doesn't get them into the house you want.

4. The sophomore only going through to get in one house because all of her friends are already in it  I’m making fun of everybody else, so I had to make fun of myself too. I was that girl. We might think we know more, but we're just as nervous as you freshmen are.

5. The real life Elle Woods "Oh my gosh, I l-o-v-e that Theta's cookies were pink!" I say this because I care, DO LESS. I promise everybody will still like you without trying that hard.

6. The girl who is there only for the apparel  “I hope they ordered us light blue spirit jerseys, yellow doesn’t bring out my eyes as much.” Does she know it’s not all free? Regardless, sororities are so much more than t-shirt or lanyard. I think she forgot about community, service, and sisterhood. Join for those reasons.

7. Your bridesmaids  “Did we just become best friends?” YES. WE. DID. They are what make the long, hot days of walking from house to house in heels well worth it. They were the girls that checked your teeth before you walked through the door of your favorite chapter. They were the girls that shared their umbrellas when the unexpected rain came on Pref Night. They will be the girls you cannot stop hugging on Bid Day. And they will be the girls that you reach so many other milestones with.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
