Since first living in a house built in the1890’s two years ago, I’ve learned a thing or two on how to kill the critters that can make, or break your day. Last week my roommate and I literally high-fived after killing a cockroach at 1 a.m. It's amazing how something so little can make even the toughest person freak out. So here are the most efficient and painless (for yourself) ways to kill a bug.

First, you must prepare the most important part, your weapon. My three go-to weapons are the vacuum, raid, and the Swiffer.

The Vacuum: Currently using a $36 vacuum from Walmart that's even equipped with a hose. The vacuum is easy, fast and includes cleanup. The hose serves as a great solution for spiders you can’t quite reach on the ceiling; also helpful for taking out roaches with a nasty clean up.

Raid: This aerosol can of poison is my weapon against any fast-flying bugs (aka my worst nightmare). For example, a few months ago I came home to find a roach on my ceiling fan string, and instantly began to cry. I knew the roach had won and I should abandon the situation all together, but then I got my raid. I proceeded by blindly spraying the raid in the general direction of the bug, while attempting to hold my breath. Once the roach fell to the ground, I was left with two options: vacuum the sucker up, or preform the stomp-n-smush.

*The stomp-n-smush is just as it sounds. First you stomp, then smush.

The Swiffer: Honestly, I owe a huge thank you to whoever discovered the Swiffers versatile uses. The Swiffer is great to get bugs in hard places to reach, or when you when you want to keep the maximum amount of space between you and the bug. Also, if the bug decides to hide in that pile of clothes on your floor, swiftly flip the cleaning tool over and use the other side to safely pick through the pile, without having to physically touching the contaminated clothing.

I promise that these three methods will work! So next time you’re laying in bed, watching Netflix and see a roach crawling across your floor, don’t panic, just attack it. There is no shame in using all three of these tool because, at the end of the day, you got to do what you got to do. And although I thoroughly believe no bug can withstand these methods, I also fully support trapping bugs under a cup, while finding a braver soul to finish it off. Unfortunately practice makes perfect for bug disposal, but after a few kills you’ll be a pro, so there is nothing to be scared of.
