On November 20, 2014, the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity ran its annual philanthropy, Pike Halftime. This event raised over 83,000 dollars towards the Florida Diabetes Camp and Riqui Villegas’s Chomp Cancer Foundation. 

The Florida Diabetes Camp is a three day summer camp for students who were diagnosed with type I diabetes. This camp has been a huge help for kids to recognize that they are not alone with their battle against diabetes. Pike Halftime provides funding for scholarships that are awarded to students at the camp, and members of Pike volunteer at the camp, as they have for the past three summers.  Funds were raised through sorority donations, T-shirts sales, ticket sales, sponsors and other donations. 

Riqui V’s Chomp cancer foundation was established last year by Pi Kappa Alpha’s very own Riqui Villegas.  In the summer of 2013, Riqui was diagnosed with lymphoma. He was admitted to Shands Hospital and after four trying months, he beat cancer. He has made it his mission to give back to the hospital that helped him and to help the kids in Shands Hospital currently fighting cancer. The foundation has raised a substantial amount from outside donations, sorority donations and Pike brotherhood donations. 

Villegas says, "I want to help these kids and let them know that there is hope. I want to use my experiences and the Chomp Cancer foundation to help them through their fight with this terrible disease.” Riqui volunteers every week at Shands Hospital in the Pediatric sector.

The Pike Halftime event itself is a contest among the 16 sororities on campus. The competition consists of the following: a dance competition, Dream Girl, and top donator. Each sorority provides a dance team that performs a five minute dance routine. The winner for the dance competition is split into two parts- Performance Award and Overall Award. The overall takes into account the amount of money donated from the sorority. The winner for the performance award was Kappa Delta, and the winner overall was Delta Delta Delta, who was also the top donor. Each sorority also has one girl in the running for Pike Dream Girl, who will be on the Pike composite for 2014-2015. This year’s Dream girl winner was Alpha Omicron Pi’s Nicole Drollette. 

The event was located at the Philips Center on the University of Florida’s campus and had about two thousand sorority girls in attendance. There were 2400 tickets sold and over 500 people watching the live stream at the Pike House.

Pike’s Vice president, David Corbin, who was responsible for running this year’s Halftime, says, “The brothers of Pike and the rest of the greek community came together and accomplished something amazing last week. We are going to be making a true difference in the lives of children with both type 1 diabetes and those being treated for cancer in Shands hospital, which is what this event is all about.”
