Today's society has glamorized relationships to the point where it has almost become unrealistic. It is commonly said if you are not in a relationship, you'll be forever alone. Then, there is the other side. If you are in a relationship, you are already jumping to being stuck together till death do you part. You just can't win!
After having my fair share of some lower quality men, I had the privilege of finally meeting my actually best friend -- my cat. That's right, I said cat. I was hesitant of adopting her because I never had a cat while growing up, my family was more on the dog side. I knew right off the bat I was too financially unstable to be a dog owner. Being the college student I am, who can hardly afford groceries, I knew my best bet would be to try something new and adopt a cat. It has been the best thing for me, and here are four reasons why.
1. A cat gives you a sense of being.
Growing up, I always had something to take care of. My pets have ranged from fish, to hermit crabs and even a hamster. Heck, I even came to college with a hermit crab so I would have something to take care of. When my hermit crab passed away (may he or she rest in peace), I needed something else to take care of. Although I lived in the dorms, and knew there was nothing I could have in the dorms besides a fish. I really did not want a fish because I hated changing their water.
I waited a year for when I lived off campus. That one year of waiting was worth every second because I was paired with my now best friend. Yes, I am talking about my cat. The feeling of having something to take care of was fulfilling, plus she is adorable. At the end of the day, no matter how many guys come and go, I know I would always have my cat's ever lasting love to come home to. Okay, that sounds slightly pathetic, but you get what I mean.
2. A cat is just as loyal as a dog.
The saying that a dog is a man's best friend is overrated. As I stated earlier, I am an avid dog lover, but now I am also an avid cat lover. My cat is just as loving as all the dogs my family has ever had. Sure, sometimes she likes to play hard to get, but at the end of the day she knows that I am her caretaker. The best feeling is when you are lying in bed, and your cat climbs up and curls up on the pillow next to you. Or, the feeling of waking up to cat licks on your forehead. I wouldn't change it for a thing.
3. A cat teaches you responsibility.
When I say responsibility, I don't mean just the type of responsibility your mom and dad hope you learn in college, but also financial responsibility. Now, not only do you have your big girl bills, but you have to add on cat food, the vet bill, and any other unexpected pet expenses. I am not complaining, but it definitely teaches you how to budget. You will want to buy that adorable romper you saw at that cute boutique, but you won't be able to because you have to buy food for that adorable little fur ball back home. Strangely, I enjoy shopping for my cat more than I like shopping for myself. Okay, maybe not really, but it can be fun!
4. Having a cat does not mean you are forever alone.
Just to clarify -- having a cat, does not make you a cat lady, which also does not mean you are forever alone. I often joke with my friends about how I like cats more then guys, and while sometimes it is how I feel, I know simply because I have a cat does not mean I have given up on my love life, or lack there of. The reality of it all is that my cat helps me forget about solely focusing on finding a guy, and helps me focus on myself. Since I have adopted my cat, I have become more involved on campus, more academically focused, and a lot less focused on trying to find my prince charming.
Once you adopt one cat, it's hard to not want another one. That's why I think if you have a cat everyone assumes you are, or will be, a cat lady. Quite frankly, I take that as a compliment.
