Dealing With Having An Uncommon Name

Think back to the day you were born, or at least pretend that you have a memory of that historic day. Your parents are holding you in their arms and they are just so happy to have you in their lives. Wait, what did they just call you? Did they REALLY just name you that? How will people know how to spell it? HOW WILL YOU KNOW HOW TO SPELL IT?

These are the questions that haunt me before bed when I have flashbacks of the Starbucks barista yelling, "ELEANOR!" as I stand around waiting for my order wondering why this chick hasn't picked up their coffee yet. My name gives me problems on a daily basis, that, I fear, will never subside.

1. Having to introduce myself five times so that the person can get it right or at least nod their head and pretend they know what my name is.

2. NEVER. FINDING. ANYTHING. WITH. MY. NAME. ON. IT. I have accepted that I can search every gift shop there is, but I will never have a keychain or a mug with my name on it.

3. People spell my name so many different ways. Who knew there were so many different ways to spell it.

4. Getting used to my name being spelled/pronounced wrong that I start to rethink if my name is even really my name anymore.

The list can go on and on. As a person with an obscure name, I take pride in the fact that my parents thought outside the box. So go and hug your family and thank them for being creative!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
