Technology is a part of our lives that seems to have slowly taken over more and more of our personal time. We have started to value our phones more than the time we have with the people around us. When I go out to eat, I see more and more people forego conversation because they are checking their phones. I must admit, I myself have done this in the past, but it's not something we should strive for.
By constantly checking our phones, we devalue the time we have with the people sitting right in front of us. Human interaction, which is such a vital part of creating character, stops completely as we learn to communicate only through texts or other social media.
It's important to clarify that there is nothing inherently bad with technology or social media. In fact, social media can be a fantastic way to keep in touch with people. However, it's important to not let technology eclipse your life. Anything in excess is unhealthy.
So, I propose a fun exercise; give your phone a break from time to time. If you and your family are having dinner, leave your phone on airplane mode. If you are going out with a friend, leave your phone in your purse or your pants.
Even better, considering that the holidays are coming, make an effort to not check your phone at all during Christmas dinner. Just enjoy your time with your family members, laugh, and be merry.
