I always seem to get the same response whenever I tell someone I'm in a service sorority. A swift eyebrow raise followed by "Oh, that must be boring.". I am here to tell you, my friends, that being in a service sorority isn't all that it may seem to be. Sure, we're heavily service- and volunteer-based, and we take great pride in all of the good that we do, but we aren't that much different from a social sorority.
Here are the reasons why I chose a service sorority, and why you should too.
1. We do traditional sorority events.
Just because we do 25-plus hours of service a semester, doesn't mean we aren't still college students who like to have fun. Once a semester we have a formal, and quite often we have betterments to get to know our fellow sisters in a fun way such as going to a movie together or going on a camping trip. We have super-cute shirts for almost every event we hold in addition to the other super-cute letter shirts and monogram hats. Most importantly, like the traditional big/little day of other sororities, we have the same process and excitement that comes along with big/little reveal and gift-giving week. Trust me, we socialize just as much as a social sorority.
2. We have a wide variety of members.
Social sororities tend to have a negative stigma of not having a wide variety of girls, which I can say is and is not true, depending on the school. On the other hand, I can say that my service sorority has over 100 girls, and each of us are very different in our own way. Whether it's race, sexuality, body type or even music interest, every girl is unique and that's what makes our sorority stand out in a positive way. We accept everyone.
3. We make a huge difference in the lives of Greenville as well as the organizations that we support.
With over 100 girls constantly working together to raise money and awareness for the organizations that we support such as American Cancer Society, Alex's Lemonade Stand and M.A.D.D, we are pretty much unstoppable and can make anything happen for these incredible organizations.
Whenever I hear "Ew, a service sorority isn't fun," I laugh. I believe I can speak for at least half, if not all, of the girls I know in a service sorority when I say that finding this group of girls and changing lives together has been the best decision I've ever made, and I wouldn't change a thing about any of it.
We do have fun, we do have a great time doing service, and it most definitely isn't boring.
