Obsessions 101

Tomi Fanning
Delta Gamma

I have a very obsessive personality. Not crazy-psycho-ex-girlfriend-stalking-your-Facebook-obsessive, but when I find something I like to do or enjoy, I fall in love with it and end up becoming obsessed! I guess you could say I live for the little things in life.

A couple of these “passions” include:

• ANY and every reality show… I don't watch drama series, family sitcoms, or even talk shows. My DVR is filled with every episode of Real Housewives, Teen Mom, The Bachelor, and American Idol

• Reading the book before I see the movie. With The Hunger Games and The Lucky One coming out so soon, I have so much reading to catch up on. I guess this has become an obsession because I want to be one of those people who can actually say they’ve read the book and it wasn’t as good.

• Anchors! Anytime I see one I have to have one. I have anchor earrings, note cards with anchors on them, and I just bought a romper last week with anchors all over it. Over the top or just loyal to my sorority?

• And my most recent obsession… THEMED PARTIES.

Joining a sorority has allowed me to expand my options of ideas for themed parties. In High School, there was a “glow” party, complete with glow sticks for everyone… how creative?! There was also a CEO and Office Hoes, Red Carpet themed, and Heaven vs. Hell themed parties that I heard about in High School. But by the time I came to college, I was ready for some fresh originality in themed parties.

You may be thinking… Why do I care so much?

Well… beside Pinterest recipes, "Pretty Little Liar" Re-runs, and free food in the Academic Plaza, dressing up is on my Top 10 lists of fun things to do. So a themed party is just ONE more excuse to fulfill one of my true passions!

Delta Gamma just had our Spring Date Party and the theme was '90s TV Shows. Here is my list of steps to having a successful time at a themed party:

Step 1: Find a date (preferably one you can actually stand to be around…)

Since I am not dating anyone, thinking about who to bring is crucial to the amount of fun you could have at the date party. Choosing someone too awkward and quiet could cause your night to be boring. Choosing someone too crazy could get you into a position where they are being disrespectful and you end up babysitting, not enjoying the lovely event. I decided to bring my friend Henry. I knew he would act like a gentleman and help me have a good time!

Step 2: Decide what to dress up as

Find a Date? CHECK! Figure out an outfit? Hmm… Well, Henry has blonde hair, and I have brown hair. I instantly thought of one of the hottest couples of the '90s… Zach Morris and Kelly Kapowski from Saved By the Bell!

Step 3: Buy your costume

I decided to go to the mall looking for a Kelly Kapowski inspired outfit and along the way I found a black floral top, a hot pink mini skirt, a jean vest, all paired with black Keds on my feet. I think Kelly Kapowski would approve (…..the sales associates at Forever 21 did!) For my date AKA Henry AKA Zach Morris, I asked him to wear light wash jeans and a bright colored T-shirt, and over this he put a wind breaker. I got him Delta Gamma Wayfarer Sunglasses. For anyone who has seen Saved By the Bell, I was trying really hard to find Henry a huge old fashion cell phone to use like Zach would in the show.

Step 4: Enjoy your night

After the perfect costumes have been purchased, it is time to get ready and have fun! Take lots of pictures with your sisters, find the best-dressed couple, and munch on the yummy snacks provided. Our date party was at Shotzi’s on North Gate and on the patio a '90s cover band was performing all the hit songs from that decade. Some of the best costumes (other than Henry and me) were Cat Dog, Helga and Arnold from Hey Arnold, the cast from Rugrats, and a couple Baywatch lifeguards.

In my opinion, it was a huge success and I cannot wait until the next one. Any suggestions for a cool theme, send them my way!

XOXO
