The MindsetWe all hear the same phrase over and over again: think positively! I know it gets old, but since before humans could write things like “The Secret” to convey positive messages, there has always been something special about thinking positive and doing positive. With the many negative thoughts that have passed through my head and things that have come out of people’s mouths, it turns out things will always be okay in the end. Pi Phis Do It In The Dark I cannot be more proud of my house for winning TWICE for Greeks Go Green. Throughout the whole process, we worked hard to make sure we were “doing it in the dark” throughout the day and night. The many thoughts of “what if we’re not saving any energy at all?” and “what if the other houses are saving more than us?” kept coming up in conversations and in many minds. What did we do? Kept pushing forward and flipping those switches off. Turns out we were saving a lot of energy and won $750 for our philanthropy as well as $750 for house improvement. Main point: Stop questioning the competition and push yourself harder.
Dr. Seuss Turn Out Since January, I have been organizing an event to help Pi Phi reach out to the community about literacy. Our Fraternity Day of Service was the perfect way to do so, which also happened to be Dr. Seuss’ birthday. After putting a lot of planning into the event, many meetings with the librarian there, and the amount of activities I had set up for the day, I couldn’t sleep the night before because I was so worried that no children would show up. This was the first time we had ever done this so reassurance from girls was nice, but nothing could stop me from thinking on what ifs and maybes. Turns out, around 40 children came filing in with their parents and was a huge success! Parents were asking if we would do the same thing next year. Main Point: Ifs, ands, buts or maybes are little hurdles you have to sprint and leap across.
Volunteers I volunteer twice a week at Hanna Community Center and help kids do their homework and reading while their parents are out working. I have really pushed my house to focus on volunteering this semester because I think it’s really important and I know we all have busy lives, but there’s always time in your week to help out somewhere. Toward the end of the month when I was collecting Community Service sheets for Panhel, I was getting nervous to whether girls have put their time into making a difference in the community. It made my week to receive all the signed sheets with a total of 61 community service hours for the month of February alone. Main Point: Have faith in people and they will come through. Those were just a few examples from my house, but they really can be applied anywhere. I guess my overall main point is: Believe in yourself and the people that surround you and good things will come!
