A Weekend with Aggie Pike

It is easy as Greeks to get wrapped up in our own little A&M Greek bubble and forget about what being a part of Greek life actually means.  Being in a sorority or fraternity is more than attending weekly meetings, and a few parties now and then.  You should want to get involved in your chapter by taking on a leadership role, reach out to brothers and sisters outside of A&M, and constantly want to better your chapter.  Since stepping back on A&M’s campus, the gentleman of Pi Kappa Alpha have gone above and beyond to not only create an excellent chapter on A&M’s campus, but a chapter that holds up to their high national standards.  After many attended one of their national leadership retreats this weekend, they are working even harder to honor the Pike saying of “Scholars, Leaders, Athletes, and Gentleman.”  Tim Dunn, Junior Pi Kappa Alpha member, contributed to the story below.

"Over the weekend of Feb. 24-25, 26 gentlemen from the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity at Texas A&M attended the PIKE Leadership Summit held in Frisco, Texas.  The Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity organizes several leadership summits each year that occur around the nation.  So far, conferences have been held in locations such as Denver, Atlanta, and Chicago, allowing Pikes from all across the United States the opportunity to come together and hear from speakers concerning chapter operations and programming.  From conventions such as these, Pikes, especially the Aggies from the Theta Theta chapter, return with stories of personal and collective development.

The Aggie Pikes were able to meet and interact with Pikes from other national and regional chapters while attending sessions concerning how to better the Texas A&M Theta Theta chapter.  While at the Leadership Summit, the delegates interacted with speakers that primarily lectured on the support, development, and advancement of Pi Kappa Alpha’s chapters by teaching practical steps to achieve those goals.  These practical steps included advice on efficient and effective recruitment to organizational management and other items.  The Texas A&M Pikes had one of the largest groups at the summit and represented to the Pi Kappa Alpha Brotherhood how seriously the Aggies take their membership within this fraternal family.  Each Pike that attended the Summit came back with fresh ideas to better the chapter in community service, campus involvement, and recruiting strategies.

One topic in particular that multiple Pikes mentioned having learned was the importance of faculty relations within a host campus.  With the blessings that Aggies have to learn from amazing professors and lecturers, the Pikes wanted to implement a system where a faculty member would be nominated and honored each month in a show of gratitude for their contributions to the mental development of the Pike Chapter and the rest of the Aggie student body.  Simple steps such as these make a great impression upon the campus community by showing the respect and care that the Greek community has toward their instructors.

Opportunities such as the PIKE University Leadership Summit are amazing experiences to share.  Each delegate from the Texas A&M Chapter that attended the conference raved of the experience and encouraged every brother to attend at least once while still a student.  The wealth of information coupled with forming new relations with brothers from distant corners of the nation resulted in an amazing weekend for the Aggie Pikes."
