Formal Schmormal

Well it’s that time of year again. For some it is a wonderful season full of joy and anticipation, for others it is a dreaded time to make plans to leave town fast. No, I’m not talking about the recent Valentine’s Day, I am speaking of fraternity formal season.

Whether it is because your boyfriend goes to school seven states away, you’ve been married to your O-Chem book all semester, or after years of being in the friend zone you’ve just given up, don’t fret- there is plenty to do when all your pledge sisters are busy finding dresses for various out-of-town formals.

Road trip to other campuses

After years of promising your best friend from high school that you’ll leave the utterly perfect college town (Athens) to spend the weekend with them, you can finally live up to your word.  Just drive a couple of hours to the nearest college sanctuary and unleash your inner demon. No one there knows you, or knows about the time you threw up on your semi-formal date at Mellow Mushroom freshman year. Better yet, meet a new flame this weekend and maybe you’ll get asked to his formal!

Surprise your parents

How pumped would your mom be if you showed up at the front door unannounced? You can’t help but be pleased with yourself as tears of joy stream down that sweet woman’s cheeks. Indulge yourself in a home-cooked meal, a nice comfy bed, and (hopefully) a full tank of gas courtesy of good ol’ pops. The folks won’t bug you for weeks after this surprise visit, and they’ll never know that you really just didn’t want to be the only girl left back at school.

Get work done!

What better opportunity than a weekend without distractions from all of your friends to start working on that resume? A lot of companies are beginning to look at applications for their summer and fall internships, so get a head start and spruce up those resumes and cover letters while you have the chance! Who cares if everyone is having a blast in some beach town? You’ll be the one making bank in the long run.

Treat yourself!

There is nothing better than some good old retail therapy at times like these. Take that shopping trip to Atlanta that you have been putting off all month.  Even better than a day at the mall is a day at the spa! You deserve it sista.

So have no fear ladies, there is plenty to do on those lonely weekends when everyone is gone. Who needs fraternity formals anyway?
