Spring Complaints
In the spirit of my last several articles, I’m back to my topic as of late: spring. Though I love the warm weather – I am definitely not a winter person – there are some things I just really hate about spring. When the weather turns nice, some things are just annoying. Now, some of these things might be completely ridiculous, but what can I say... First: Misjudging the weather. You wake up, see sunshine and blue sky and immediately assume it’s about 30 degrees warmer than it actually is. I’m the type of person who is always cold but constantly hoping for warm weather. Because of these tendencies, I spend all of February, March and April dressing for weather entirely warmer than what we actually have and freezing to death all day. This applies to going out, too. Although, sometimes, with going out, it actually is warmer during the evening and then by the time you’re walking home, it’s dropped to 20 degrees and you think you might die. This is especially true when you convince yourself that it’s warm enough to wear that cute dress that has been in your closet since October. Second: Wanting to be outside. Along with the misjudging the weather idea, I always want to be outside in the spring, but when I actually get there it’s either muddy, cold or raining. I spend all of class looking out the window and wanting to be in the sunshine only to complain bitterly as I walk home because the wind is cold or I forgot how muddy it is. Third: No breaks. To me, second semester is so much longer than fall semester. Yeah, it goes by quickly because it’s always so busy, but at the same time, we just don’t get those random days off. There’s no fall break, or Thanksgiving, or Labor Day. Sure, we get spring break, but that’s basically the only good break. President’s Day really doesn’t count because that day is mainly just for sleeping anyway. Fourth: Trying to figure out what to do with your summer. There’s always this stress about how to spend summer break. Do you want to be productive or not? You can work, get an internship, study abroad, or simply do nothing. It’s up to you (or your bank account), but it’s always a struggle. Personally, I’m super excited to be going to London this summer with a couple of my sisters on a study abroad trip through the English department. Summer is a great time to build resumes, too, through volunteer work or just getting contacts with people in your field. Fifth: Rain. I know I talk about weather a lot, but honestly, there was a lake outside of Minnich the other day. It pours rain and there’s just no way to not get drenched on the way to class. Not to mention, I’ve managed to go through a ridiculous number of umbrellas this year because I always seem to break them or lose them. On the plus side, though, I do love wearing rain boots, which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense with my hatred for gray, wet weather. Well, ultimately, there are definitely more positives to spring than negatives, but there are still those things that drive me insane. On the bright side, POTH, Miss Miami, and spring break are all coming up. Also, there’s the Charter Day Ball to add a little sparkle to February. Altogether, second semester is okay, even if we are in danger of being flooded all the time.
