SDSU RUSH WEEK!
This past Monday, Jan. 30 marked the beginning of rush week at San Diego State University. Over the past couple years, San Diego State has virtually restructured the Greek system and there are finally 11 active chapters. Four years ago, there were houses getting their charter revoked, and things seemed to be at a steady decline. However, after some internal changes, a resurgence of campus involvement by brothers of various chapters, the system has been revitalized, with the additions of Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) and Phi Delta Theta. Recruitment is a process that happens every semester, which fuels the house for years to come. At SDSU, there is a slew of events that happen at every chapter house followed by a preferential ball on the Friday or Saturday. Most chapters carry on their traditions that they have had for years, which includes the bid process and how new members become active brothers. Spring recruitment is usually a little less crowded than fall, with pledge classes ranging in numbers anywhere from five to 20 potential new members. When I was going through my rush process, I remember how welcoming everyone was and how I looked up to many of the brothers in the house. Now, four years later, I can look over my chapter from an outside view, as I watch them grow as men, and as a house. It’s all about finding the house that you feel most comfortable at, and where you can see yourself spending a majority of your college experience. It is an unforgettable process that really sticks out in your mind as you look back on your experience. For myself, I have it in three parts: rush, new member education, and active duty. New member education is a great semester in which you become close with fellow peers as you share the common bond of being a potential new member. It is amazing to see the re-development of the Greek system at SDSU, with new houses emerging and old ones staying atop of the throne. Recruitment for spring 2012 is sure to be one that makes memories for all Greeks.
