Victoria's [Fashion] Secrets: Only in San Diego

San Diego State in a unique place that has formed many trends of its own.  Freshman year, it was difficult adjusting to some of the fashion styles that seemed foreign to newcomers.  Within the first few weeks of going to school here, I started noticing the many things that differed from the high school days.  No longer was it cool to wear Hollister or Abercrombie. No longer would it fly to go to campus in your pajamas and avoid running into anyone.  With more than 35,000 students at this campus, you are always being noticed.  Though the 45-chapter Greek community is still a huge community, you tend to know most everyone in it, or at least begin to recognize familiar faces.  Below is a list of 10 trends that are humorous to those who recognize these common patterns in the Greek community.

1. Only in San Diego will you see girls wearing UGG boots paired with shorts.

2. Only in San Diego will people complain that it’s freezing when it’s 65 degrees outside.

3. Only in San Diego could you need your umbrella and sunglasses in the same day.

4. Only in San Diego is it acceptable for guys to wear tank tops.

5. Only in San Diego do people name their hair styles (a “brom-over”).

6. Only in San Diego can girls get away with wearing heels to class.

7. Only in San Diego can you find people in costumes every other weekend.

8. Only in San Diego is it acceptable for hundreds of girls to wear the same T-shirt on any given day.

9. Only in San Diego are tan lines an accessory.

10. Only in San Diego can you work out in a sports bra and not get weird looks.

11. Only in San Diego are girls expected to wear dresses Wednesday through Saturday.

The Greek community at San Diego State has really formed a world of its own over the years. Those on the outside may not always understand it, but those of us who have devoted ourselves to our chapter appreciate the significance in our community.  When we graduate and begin a new chapter of our lives, we will look back, hopefully with fondness, at our time in college and remember our world within the Greek system.   There’s no doubt that we will one day look back laugh at some of the fashion trends we followed, and we will cringe at others. But no matter how much time passes, and no matter where we go, our house letters will always be memorable. Our letters are one of the few things that will never go out of style.
