Spring Break 2012: South Padre Island
Quick question – Have I actually heard people arguing whether it is worth it or not to go on a college spring break trip? Since when is this even a question? Our age group has grown up learning to save our money and be responsible, but we are still in college. Spring break is about having an entire week inside of a college dream world. We go to places where 50,000 students compete over activities that are only “cool” to do way too much of in college. We may have more money in a few years, but we aren’t allowed in these places without being considered creepy. Spring break trips are offered to an age group between 18 – 22 years old, and if you miss out on that four-year period I guarantee you will regret your decision for the rest of your life. I’m not even going to waste my time arguing with people who disagree with what I’ve said because I’m probably not friends with you and wouldn’t want to hang out with you anyway. The reason I am writing this article is to tell you about your spring break options and why I am insanely excited for this year’s trip. There are some great places to go at very affordable prices. I’ve talked to a ton of people who are going to Cancun, Mexico and Panama City, Florida, but this year it seems that Iowa has a massive group of students heading to South Padre Island in the very southern tip of Texas. What to do during the day: This is the easiest answer by far! Coca-Cola Beach is located on the western part of island and has been highlighted by MTV’s Spring Break madness all throughout our childhood. There are great concerts and thousands of students posting up their own college's flags like we are astronauts on the moon. I’ve heard that the police try to stay out of the way and when they are around it is for safety reasons, rather than hunting down the younger crowd. After five long days of raging in a row, some people have said that they like to end their week on a lighter note. South Padre Island is also known for many great daytime activities such as dolphin watches, fishing, beautiful golf courses, horseback riding, kite-boarding, skydiving and more! Many people are offering great discounts on the beaches for these activities during the most tourist-filled season of the year. What to do at night: South Padre Island is known as the best place to party during the day out of all the spring break locations, but I have heard some iffy statements about the night. South Padre has some awesome bars, but lacks on the night clubs and dancing side of nightlife. If you are looking for some crowded bars to catch up with people that you’ve partied with all day and listen to some live music, you should check out places such as Louie’s Backyard, Clayton’s Beach Bar and Grill, Laguna Bob Bar on the Bay, Tequila Sunset and there are many more. The night clubs are the tough places to find in South Padre, but they are there! I’m excited to check out Club Chaos and Mooncussers. These places should be extremely packed this season with record breaking crowds expected to be on their way. Overall: If you’re headed to South Padre this March, I hope I’ve been able to convince you to do a few new things that you hadn’t thought of yet. And if you’re not – sucks to suck and you better go next year! The beautiful condos and great deals offered to students were just extra great things to add to the list of why I’m choosing to go to South Padre this year.
