Stagnation

I’ll be real with all of you. I’m kind of bored right now. And I’m pretty sure that you are, too. Let’s find the root of this problem now, shall we?

No major holidays to look forward to. See, I know Valentine’s Day is approaching. But the thing about Valentine’s Day is that it’s a holiday exclusively devoted to celebrating the joys and wonder of love. And until I find someone to share said joys and wonder with, you can guarantee that the only thing I’m going to really like about Valentine’s Day is the fact that I can raid Target for pink and red Hershey’s kisses on Feb. 15 for 50 percent off. At least there’s something positive that comes out of it.

Classes are kind of meh, for lack of a better word. I made the usual start-of-semester resolutions prior to the commencement of second semester. Less procrastination. More studying. More office-hour dwelling. More sitting in the front so that I’m more compelled to pay attention. It’s now dawning on week four… I am still an expert procrastinator. I haven’t gone to office hours for any of my classes yet. And the front row is cool and all, but now that I think about it, those seats in the third, fourth, and fifth row don’t seem too bad. (They’re close enough, right?) On the positive side, I am not enrolled in a math class this semester. (No partitions of sets or matrices for me ever again, thankfully).

I think another issue is that at this time of the year, everything in Bloomington is gray - the sky, the landscape, the slush that accumulates along roads after a snowfall. To me, gray is the ultimate color representation of boredom and apathy, and when you're surrounded by that everywhere you turn, it's kind of hard not to forbid the weather from matching your mood.  Speaking of which, what happened to the snow? I don’t know whether it’s a good or bad thing that we’ve been seeing more rain and ice than white powder this year. On one hand, I guess it’s nice that it isn’t so cold that I have to wear leggings underneath my jeans like I did last year. On the other hand, snow is just so pretty to look at; much prettier than this gray nonsense. And these ice storms are going to give me a heart attack if they keep on continuing… I firmly believe that there is nothing more terrifying than that split second when you hit a rough patch of ice and see your entire life flash in front of your eyes before you take a tumble.

The stretch between post-Bid Week festivities and the emergence of spring might seem like a difficult, ceaseless one, but hey, it could be way worse. We are pretty spoiled as IU students, and a bout of idleness every once in a while is bound to occur once in a while.  Before we know it, our beloved squirrels will once more scamper across campus. North Jordan will once more see a resurgence in evening frat laps. North Faces and rain boots will once more be shoved to the back of the closet where they belong. And all will be well in the world again.

I think the conversation amongst two of my sisters as I sit here in the library and write this while simultaneously eavesdropping upon them says it best: We live great lives. We have two arms and two legs. We are Greek, and we are Hoosiers. It really doesn’t get any better than that.
