Starting Every Year Off The Same: Lazy

Amy Keighley

Well, it’s the end of the January. How’s that New Year’s resolution going? Have you lost five pounds so far, have you avoided McDonald’s and not had a single Diet Coke yet?! Well, if you are anything like the normal American, the answer to those is most likely no. It’s hard to keep a resolution in general, but being in college and trying to keep a resolution is even harder. If you were one of the million students who said they were going to go “get in shape in 2010,” you are also one of the million who were napping when they said they would be working out. We’re college kids, we need our sleep. And rumor is that you lose calories as you sleep, so why go and make a fool of yourself at the rec if you can just sleep and lose those lbs. Being in college, we need fun ways to get us to the rec and get us to burn those calories if sleeping doesn’t seem to be doing the trick. But have no fear; I am here to give you some tips on how to start the resolution up again and make things happen the fun way.

· Take a walk!

Get your friends together and go take a stroll around the campus. With classes getting more hectic, it would be a good chance to catch up and get a good workout in! (Also, for the sorority girls, it is a great opportunity to find a potential little!)

· Take some classes at the rec!

Zumba is a personal fave of mine. It’s so fun, and all you do is dance. Who wouldn’t want to dance for an hour straight?!

· Buy some free weights!

Go to Wal-Mart and just get a few sets of free weights and use them in your room when you are watching TV. Don’t just do the usual and boring moves. Try and do moves that are creative and work different muscles. My personal discovery that works well is “Brushing the teeth” or “Shave the legs.” This is an opportunity to get creative.

· Butt Clenches!

Clench your butt as you walk up the stairs. This may not be fun for you, but it would be fun for the people walking behind you.

· Wear layers!

Next time you go to Pachinks to get your dance on, wear multiple layers to create more sweat. You may not get someone’s number, but you will sweat off pounds.

Remember, spring break is just around the corner!  Whether you are going home or going to the beach, you want to be pushing celebrity body status (Not Jack Black and not Rosie O’Donnell). It’s about to be February, who said that resolutions have to start in January? I say that you can start whenever you want. So, enjoy the last few days of being lazy and kick into gear when the first rolls around! Good luck!
