Winter Break Ski Trips vs. Spring Break Beach Trips

Some of you who have been on spring break trips before may be asking yourself, is there any comparison? In my experience, there is. I went to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for Spring Break 2011 and it was incredible. There is truly nothing like lying on a beautiful beach with your closest friends soaking up some sun and enjoying a round of margaritas. However, there is also nothing like standing at the top of a mountain with your closest friends, looking down on the world with adrenaline pumping throughout your entire body. This winter break, I decided to tag along on the sophomore AXO-Delt ski trip to Keystone, CO just for fun. Needless to say, it did not disappoint.

There were a little over 30 of us that all caravanned down to Keystone. We rented out both sides of a gorgeous condo right at the base of the mountain. Hardly any of us knew one another and it was honestly better that way. Getting to know so many new people was one of the best parts of the trip. And after falling down mountains together during the day and a few rounds of “Ring of Fire/Circle of Death” at night, it didn’t take long for us to all get acquainted.

Within our group of 30 or so, ability to ski and/or snowboard ranged from expert to beginner. The experienced ones skied and snowboarded for the majority of the three days we were there. Some even went night skiing. The beginners got on the mountain the first day to try out their ski legs.  Several decided it was not for them and returned their ski equipment that night.  Nevertheless, almost everyone got on the mountain at some point during the trip. Having such a big group was so helpful because no matter what level you skied or snowboarded at, there was always someone else at that level. Or, in my case, someone to help me get up after I took a bad fall. And believe me, there were many.

Those of us who chose not to ski or snowboard the rest of the trip did not just lay around the condo all day. One afternoon some of us went tubing and another day a group of us hit up Dillon’s outlet malls while another group drove down to Denver to shop. It was hard to believe that after skiing or doing other recreational activities all day and then raging at night, we could all get up the next day and do it all over again. But we did, as well as saving time for a short nap in the late afternoons. Frankly, there was never really a dull moment on the entire trip.

So how is this comparable to spring break on the beach? Well, you’ll never know unless you go experience the mountains for yourself. Being in such a scenic place with some of the most chill, down to earth people I have ever met made for an unforgettable experience. It didn’t matter that I was the only junior in a group full of sophomores- everyone was just there to have a good time. And that we did, one broken arm, overflowed toilet, stained carpet, and two busted hot tubs later. We may not have been soaking up some sun in 90 degree weather, but the cold did not slow us down by any means and we made enough crazy memories to keep us talking and reminiscing for the rest of our college lives and beyond.
