Promising Shows for a Promising New Year

Another new year brings in another national championship and yet another semester. It calls for a fresh start; a new opportunity to prove yourself. In lieu of new opportunities for success and New Year’s resolutions, the new year is also a time for new TV shows on the premium cable channels to prove themselves worthy of another season.

With channels like HBO and Showtime that have brought you beloved shows such as "Sex and the City," "Dexter," "True Blood" as well as "Entourage," you’ll be in for a whirlwind of drama, laughter and thrills with this upcoming season.

If you aren’t familiar with Chris Lilley’s gut-bursting comedy series "Summer Heights High" that premiered on HBO a few years back, I would highly suggest looking into it. He is famous for his season long mockumentary shows where he plays each of the 3-6 main characters. He has recently come out with yet another one-season TV show by the name of "Angry Boys." If you’re a fan of crazy teenage antics and hilarious rap songs, this is the show for you. Lilley plays the roles of teenage twins Daniel and Nathan that are brought back from his previous show “We Can Be Heroes,” their grandmother Gran who is a cooky juvenile detention center worker with multiple guinea pigs, a Japanese mother of a teen skateboarder champ, the rapper S.mouse, as well as Blake, the World Champion surfing legend. We are brought into this world of “angry boys” and how their lives intertwine with one another. If you’re looking for a great new comedy show without the hassle of watching the previous five or some odd seasons to actually know what’s going on, definitely check this one out.

In addition to the premiere of Chris Lilley’s new mockumentary, check out the new season of Showtime’s "Shameless" that just aired last week. William H. Macy plays an alcoholic father of six roaming around the bars and streets of the South side of Chicago, leaving his eldest daughter, played by Emmy Rossum, in charge of keeping everything in one piece. This hilarious new dramedy is full of outrageous occurrences that include grand theft auto, baby snatching, and agoraphobia. You’ll be in for a real treat with this upcoming season’s crazy money making schemes the Gallagher family goes through to put the bacon on the table.

If you’re not a big fan of comedy, stay tuned this upcoming April for the second season of HBO’s "Game of Thrones." With winter arising in this medieval world of power hungry royals, there will be a lot more to deal with than who is the rightful heir to the throne.

If you are short a New Year’s resolution this year, make it to catch up on some of these shows as well as the other reigning shows. Scout’s honor, you’ll be blown away and craving more of them come summer.
