Brand New You

It’s a brand new semester! For some of you, this may be your last, but if you’re a junior like me, you’ve got an entire year and a half ahead of you. I’m sure you recall those little things called New Year’s resolutions. I made about 20 of them, wrote them down on a sheet of paper, and taped them to the inside of my weekly planner for the New Year. To be honest, my goal isn’t to accomplish every single one, but instead, I want to start at number 1 and see how far I can go.

Winter break was a time for relaxation, sleeping in late, hanging out with friends and eating all of the holiday goodness, but now it’s back to the grind of school. There are many things you can do to get back into the swing of things, and that includes getting yourself even more involved than first semester. I spent the majority of my winter break working on my resume and cover letters for job applications for the summer, babysitting and seeing my friends. I feel very accomplished after this month long vacation, but after staring at my resume every single day, I felt the need to make it even more advanced. I fell in love with the feeling of depositing money into my bank account after every night of babysitting over the weeks that I was home, and I knew that I would get that same feeling as I immersed myself into what our campus has to offer.

One of my New Year’s resolutions includes getting more involved with my major. I am an English/Creative writing major, and I get tons of weekly emails about opportunities for students within the college of LAS. These opportunities range from meet and greets with the LAS staff, book/short story readings by famous authors and graduates from the university, and many job fairs. I usually find myself brushing off these emails, but for this semester, I vow to take a closer look and challenge myself to step outside my comfort zone and throw myself into my area of study.

Another one of my resolutions includes increasing my volunteering hours. In high school, I volunteered my time at the local junior high by helping direct their spring musical every year. Not only did I enjoy the process, I got to meet some terrific kids. Volunteering looks great on a resume, and also helps build character and connections.

It may seem silly, but number three on my list of resolutions includes visiting CRCE or the ARC much more often. A wise friend once told me that even walking on the track for 30 minutes a day can increase your study habits and help you do better in school. I am a music fanatic, so I will definitely be downloading new music for my workouts. New music makes working out fun and enjoyable, plus you’ll feel much better and productive about your days. It’s also a great study break!

Now that you’ve heard some of my resolutions, go ahead and make a list of your own. You’ll be surprised at how much you can accomplish during your first week back. Make it a habit to take care of yourself and do what is best for you. This New Year brings forth a world of possibilities; all you have to do is go after them!
