Syllabus Week
Over the last two weeks many of us have traveled home or to other more interesting locations to celebrate different holidays and to bring in the New Year with family and friends. Some may complain about Michigan’s short winter break and friends at other schools may brag about their six weeks of time off this time of year, but personally I am happy to be back and would rather put the time in now and enjoy one of the longest summer vacations than have a month and a half’s worth of time at home. Not to mention that as a part of Greek life, the week back after the break between semesters is like a flashback to welcome week. “Syllabus Week,” as it has come to be known, is a great time for a lot of reasons. First of all, this year our football team made it to the sugar bowl! We were ranked 13th in the final BCS standings and competed against Virginia Tech on the 3rd of January. On top of that, by the time we are back at school, it is typical that everyone is really excited to see each other, and because the workload is so low the first week of classes we have a great opportunity to really enjoy the reunions. To really enjoy the first week, the social chairs of each house typically plan a really full week of creatively themed parties. This gives everyone a chance to see all of our friends in the various houses on campus before the workload picks up and we have to refocus on school. Therefore, the spirits on campus the first week back to school are high and for good reason. Last year’s syllabus week was so much fun and this year was no different. We had New Year’s Eve all over again and on Tuesday we helped celebrate our trip to New Orleans by having a Sugar Bowl/Mardi Gras themed party with our friends in AEPi. We brought TVs downstairs and had the game on during the party so that everyone could cheer on the Wolverines and enjoy the first night back at school as well. All in all syllabus week is a great time to reunite with friends and really enjoy the benefits of Greek social life before classes pick up and the workload becomes more intense. Lucky for us, the Sugar Bowl only added to how great this year’s first week back was and hopefully next year we’ll be in an even better bowl game.
