Spring "To Do" List

The beginning of Spring Quarter marks a huge change in student life for everyone here at UCLA.  Winter Quarter is always a dreary time of trudging through puddles and cold mornings on the way to class.  Spring brings the winding down of the year and the opportunity to get out after the months of pitiful hibernation.  All students should participate in at least some of the traditional activities UCLA offers this time of the year.

The most well known and perhaps most widely participated activity during spring is visiting Sunset Canyon Recreation Center, or “Sunset Rec.”  Whether you want to tan, play volleyball, swim, or simply read outside, this is the perfect time of year to get out.  Hundreds of students congregate throughout the week and especially towards the weekend to enjoy the uniquely perfect weather in Southern California.  The best part of Sunset Rec is definitely the attitude.  Where Powell can invoke stress and anxiety, visiting Sunset Rec can put one’s mind completely at ease.

Another great activity after the long winter lull is to restart efforts to stay active.  One of the best workouts around UCLA is running the perimeter.  The multi-mile course covers well planted dirt paths, parts of campus, and Westwood Village.  Spring Quarter means warmer mornings and evenings and adds an extra incentive to exercise.  Also, running through the heart of campus is a great way to see the beauty of UCLA at night and stay active.

Moving off-campus, Santa Monica and Venice Beaches are great places to spend afternoons or weekends.  The pier at Santa Monica is a great date spot and offers excellent restaurants and even better views.  Venice, on the other hand, is a landmark that everyone should visit.  It as an absolutely eclectic collection of people, shops, restaurants and other features that embody and convey the beach community spirit of much of Western Los Angeles.  Whether its listening to the work of struggling musicians, admiring unique art (I once saw a metal sculpture of “Predator” outside of a shop), or playing basketball, there are unlimited options in terms of entertainment.

Another great, off-campus Spring Quarter activity is baseball.  Whether you are a diehard fan of the game or a first-timer, baseball games are not just a UCLA tradition, but an American one.  One of the best deals in L.A. is the all-you-can-eat pavilion at Dodgers Stadium.  For about thirty dollars, you sit in the bleachers and enjoy your fill of hot dogs, peanuts, nachos, and all of the classic baseball fare.
