Racing for PhilanthropyReady, Set, Go! A race was exactly what Alpha Delta Pi had in mind on Sunday, March 4, when they took over the Glen Terrel Mall in order to host their spring semester philanthropy, Diamond Dash, to raise money for their charity, the Ronald McDonald House. Spread out across the Mall, the Diamond Dash involved four teams including various fraternities and sororities on campus participating in a tournament-style competition. This included three rounds of four Minute-To-Win-It challenges, making it a total of 16 challenges for all four rounds. These fun challenges ranged from easy to difficult. Two teams would play against each other in each round. The first team to make it across the finish line would make it to the final round. The losing teams would participate in an extra round called “best loser." Some of the Minute-To-Win-It challenges included "Dizzy Mummy," where the teams wrapped a teammate in toilet paper, "Yank Me," where each team had to pull a tower of cups on top of each other, and "Junk In the Trunk," which involved teams belting a Kleenex box with ping pong balls in it and attempting to empty the box. One team was crowned “best loser” before the final round, which went to Tau Kappa Epsilon. Afterward, two teams went to the last final round named “Pi Love” where both teams stuck their faces in pie for the challenge. After a close battle against Alpha Omicron Pi, the winner of the Diamond Dash was Sigma Phi Epsilon. They won the tournament and a surprise prize. There was a second part of the philanthropy as well. The amount of pop can tabs each team brought the day of the philanthropy also factored into the final score. The week before the philanthropy, each team gathered an accumulation of pop can tabs to give back to Alpha Delta Pi the day of the philanthropy. According to Annette Novey, the philanthropy chair, “the pop tabs collected by the teams will be recycled and will help pay the rent for the people that stay in the houses.” All the proceeds of the philanthropy went to The Ronald McDonald House Charities. Since 1979, Alpha Delta Pi has been a long standing partner with the Ronald McDonald House. The 140 chapters of Alpha Delta Pi across the U.S. have raised a total of more than $5 million to the charities. The Ronald McDonald House provides a home away from home for children with terminal illnesses who travel across the country to receive treatment. Not only does Alpha Delta Pi raise money, but for Ronald McDonald Houses close to the sororities, they send members to provide cleaning services, making meals, and playing with the children as well. Ronald McDonald House is very close to the hearts of the girls. However, they individually support other charities as well, making philanthropy a very important part of their lives. Not only was the philanthropy just about raising money, but the Mall was covered with the letters of Alpha Delta Pi. Not only was it a time for philanthropy, but it was a time for sisterhood as well.
