Why We Love Themed Socials

As those who participated in recruitment have been sorted into their chapters and are beginning to settle into their new sororities or fraternities, it now starts to become that time of the year to kick it up a notch with the themed socials. As soon as recruitment had ended, it seemed that the new pledge classes were extremely eager to try out some of the themes, something they’ve been witnessing since first semester but didn’t have the opportunity to take part in. As an outsider, they all realized how crazy everyone looked dressed up, but they were still all the more eager to try it out. Whether the theme be '80s workout, construction, black and white, toga, or the classic, American, everyone wants in.

Most people admit that at some point themed socials can become a bit of a drag. Not the actual socials themselves, but what it takes to get ready for the themes and the costumes. Often times it becomes difficult to find items of clothing that are suitable for a specific theme, since most of them are abstract and out of the ordinary. Yet, when you’re able to search around and do some digging, it all becomes worth it. The top places that we’ve found to be the most beneficial to look for themed clothing here around Oxford are:

-Wal-Mart

-Thrift stores

-Target

But most importantly and arguably the most reliable,

-The closets in the corridors or the fraternity houses

The things that people bring to school with them in the hopes that it will serve some purpose for any type of themed social or party is borderline ridiculous, but also downright hilarious. Searching through the closets in the corridor and the fraternity houses, you’ll find almost anything you need for free. You’ll be able to find clothing and items ranging from frat packs, construction vests, neon jumpsuits, five-dollar American flag T-shirts, and a continual list of other extremely random necessities. Almost everyone has some kind of unique item up for grabs, which makes putting your outfit together fairly easy, but most of all cheap. In the corridors, all the girls can be seen running around helping one another out as clothing and caution tape fly out of doors and down the hallways.

The greatest aspect of getting ready and dressing up for these themed socials is the relaxed atmosphere of simply not caring that it brings to the night. No matter the theme, everyone dresses up together and everyone looks just as equally foolish, in the best way possible. While seeing people uptown after their socials, it becomes apparent that everyone looks just as happy and confident as if they were wearing their normal attire. Themed socials may not be ideal for every weekend, but when they come around they give everyone a chance to relax, forget the worrying about what you look like, and they allow you to just step back and have a great time being goofy with your friends.
