Dos and Don'ts of Date NightsListen up, young ones of Athens. Just because we can do about anything we want in this wonderful life of our college years, this does not mean we can forget our manners. When you are planning on taking a hot date or even just a friend to your date function, parents weekend or semi-formal, do not forget a few things your mama taught you. If you remember these few tips and tricks, you’ll get the date night T-shirt and also get invited to another function. These are the dos and don’ts of date nights. Let’s start with the girls. Ladies, do not forget to call him in advance. This sounds simple, but it is important to give him enough time to figure out what he is going to wear also. His suit, jacket, or tux might be at the dry-cleaners, at home, or he might need to borrow one from a brother. Let him have enough time to primp and prepare as well. He might even need to call his mom at home and have her ship it to him or he might need to drive home and grab it. Make sure to alert your man with a week or two notice. More is better in this case. If you invite him, it is a good idea to provide everything needed for the night to be enjoyable, and it would be nice to pay for his dinner for a change. It is always nice to treat your guest. Also, as long as there are not any big problems, make sure to add to his collection of date night T-shirts. The guys love wearing our letters just as much as we do! With that in mind, make sure you choose a date who will treat you well and represent your chapter well also. Okay guys, it is your turn. The most important aspect of asking your date is to ask her the right way. Please call her. More importantly, please ask her sober, not at 1:30 a.m. downtown. Your date has to plan her outfit and might need to pick something up from the cleaners or a shop on Clayton Street. Guys, make sure to ask her in advance. This means at least ask her one or two weeks from the date of the event. If the event is a formal, Mountain Weekend, or Old South type of thing, make sure to ask two or three weeks in advance to secure a date you actually want to take. More time is plenty of time in this case. For both sides of the story, do not forget to plan out the night enough so your friends can enjoy it together. Plan for dinner, a pregame and a late night. It is a good idea to try to make a reservation for dinner and downtown before the event. Places like Nona and Last Resort do not take reservations on game weekends, so call in advance for wherever you want to go. Also important is to know the proper attire. For certain events, black tie is necessary for cocktail or formal; whatever the occasion, make sure to confirm the proper requirements. For emphasis, every one ought to call or ask in person for the date. It is so easy to just shoot someone a text, but if the night is going to be this fun and exciting, then make sure your date feels special. Seemingly simple, it is a good idea to stick with your date for the entire event. Do not run off with your buddies, unless the situation turned really bad really quickly. Do not forget to late night after a fun night downtown, so you can check out all the fun pictures y’all took that night while snarfing on pizza at Little Italy or Eat Hibachi or whatever your favorite tradition might be. Finally, as I mentioned before, be a good date and deserve the date night T-shirt. Hopefully, you had such a great time that pictures will not suffice as your only memories of the glory days at Georgia. You need the shirt. Guys, get her a large or XL, obviously.
