The ABC's Of DeSales University

I swear we're a real school.

DeSales? I swear we’re a real college.

A- Alumni.

We may not have any crazy, famous alumni but guess who did graduate from here? Did you guess the original Steve from "Blues Clues"? Because if you did you would be correct. Try to top that, I dare you.

B- Bingo at McShea.

It’s all fun and games until you have one spot left and you need to hurdle over couches to touch the table, and the same guy has been winning four times in a row. If you thought senior citizens took Bingo seriously, you’ve obviously never seen Bulldogs play Bingo.

C- Commonly asked questions/phrases.

What’s DeSales? Where is that? Do you know so and so? I think my friend has a cousin who went there. What’s it by? Is that a college? You really have a curfew? Oh cool.

D- DUC food

Enough said.

E- Everyone, and I mean everyone goes to the track house on the weekends.

A small Catholic school that barely has parties, of course we’re going to jump at any chance we can to go out and have a good time.

F- Friendly people.

Growing up in New Jersey I wasn’t used to having people hold doors open, and walk slowly to have a conversation with me. At DeSales people will hold doors for you even when you’re 20 feet away and it’s snowing. Everyone smiles when you walk past them… (this used to freak me out but I absolutely love it now).

G- Girl’s lacrosse.

Maybe I’m a bit biased (considering I play), but the girl’s lax team is the newest, most upcoming sport at DeSales. This is our first year, starting out club, and next year we’re gonna be a solid team. Keep an eye on us, because we’re going to do great things.

H- The Hill.

We all know the hill. As soon as winter hits the bales of hay are lined up at the bottom of the hill so we can all go sledding and not fly into the middle of the street. One or two walks up the hill after sledding will definitely tire you out.

I- Inspirational speeches from Mr. Louis.

If you don’t know who he is you will soon. You can often find him in the DUC, Gambet, or in Dooling late at night.

J- Juggling three tests, two papers, one quiz, and a lab report in one week.

If you don’t believe me try taking Russian Cultures…that will make up for about half of the work listed.

K- Keeping your dessert ticket for the next day.

What they don’t know won’t hurt ‘em, am I right?

L- Laying in bed every morning debating whether or not it’s really worth it to go to class-

Do I really have to go? I can afford a 0, right? Maybe she won’t take attendance today. Can I just drop out of life?

M- Maintaining your weight.

Honestly, because whether we want to believe it or not freshman 15 is a real thing.

N- No avoiding weekend hookups.

Trying to get a nice breakfast on Sunday morning after a night out? Well, good luck. There’s no avoiding that uncomfortable weekend hookup you had last night. Is it too late to turn around? Did he see you? Did he look like that last night? Yeah..the answer is always yes, at a small school like this what else could you expect?

O-Outrageous lines at the Sauté.

We may be a small school, but despite the small amount of students there is always a huge line for the sauté. Make sure to plan out the proper times to leave for dinner otherwise you’ll be waiting for the chicken tender bar for way too long, and start to question your existence.

P- Praying your class is cancelled during a snow storm but knowing it’s probably not going to happen.

There’s no better way to “be who you are and be that well” other than going to class in a snow storm/flood/monsoon/tsunami.

Q- Quiet hours.

Every night from 10-12, 12-2 or 24 hours during finals week. Some people find this impossible to follow.

R- Roommates/floor mates.

The best people you will ever meet and the worst.

S- St. Francis DeSales.

The most iconic statue on campus (until JC arrives). Students love his iconic saying “be who you are and be that well” but they love putting things in his hand a lot more. (ex. Cup of Noodles, a missing priority path sign, and a light saber)

T- Trying to nap when housekeeping is doing rounds.

It’s the one day of the week you finally get to sleep in. Think again. You hear the knocks down the hall and know it’s only a matter of time before you’re next.

U- Uber.

Learn to love it or learn to walk. FYI for those who were wondering. It’s about $6 to uber across campus…you’re welcome.

V-Very Windy.

Want to straighten your hair for class? Sure go ahead, except the wind tunnel that is our campus has a different hairstyle in mind. Try the tornado up-do.

W- When in doubt get a quesadilla.

It’s no secret the DUC likes to experiment sometimes with its food. Bombay flavors? Not sure what that is looks like I’ll be going with a quesadilla tonight.

X- Xtra long walks.

Have a class in Gambet, Campbell, or Herd? Have fun. You better leave for class 20 minutes early to make sure you get there on time.

Y- You’re gonna need an umbrella.

You may not believe me if you don’t go here, but for everyone who goes here the mysterious local weather phenomenon is extremely true. Invest in a rain jacket or umbrella if you need to walk around on a Tuesday or Thursday, because odds are, it’s gonna be raining. Seriously, don’t even check the weather….just assume.

Z- Zero options for dinner during Lent.

Am I the only one that only craves chicken on Fridays? It’s like my body knows and just wants to mess with me. Maybe I’ll just try one of the 10 different types of potatoes offered. (For example, curly fries, smiley fries, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, steak fries, potato wedges, potato soup, tater tots, hash browns or roasted potatoes.)

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
