Creativity encompasses much more than many people think. Being creative is more than being "artsy" or "inventive." It is about new ideas, creation, and struggling through the process.
Creativity can come in "lightbulb" or "A-ha!" moments.
Sometimes the doors to creativity burst open. Sleep will be lost, obnoxious amounts of time will be spent, and there is nothing to do about it. In both the most opportune or inopportune times, creative moments are all-consuming. The hardest part is deciding whether it is a blessing for a curse.
There really is no logic behind the creative process.
Everyone has their own creative process, their own way that only works for him or her. Find it. There is no right or wrong way to be creative, no reason behind why ideas and works are the way they are. That is part of the beauty behind creativity.
It's all or nothing.
There are times when there is an endless flow of ideas and excitement. All the creative juices flowing at the right time and place is one of the best feelings. However, there are times where, no matter what, nothing is going to increase the flow of creativity, otherwise known as creative despair.
Creative moments can require a great deal of focus.
People talk about "being in the zone." "The zone"exists, just ask any creative person. Being "in the zone" can also require unbelievable focus. Do not disturb a creative person at work. It can be disastrous for him or her and even the disturber.
It needs to be perfect (or as close to perfect as possible).
Once an idea is there, a creative person is pretty stuck on how it ought to be. Whether it be a basic structure or outline, just the vision inspires more ideas and excitement. Creative people can be known to be perfectionists at times.
Creativity drives you mad.
Will things change? Almost always. Will it turn out exactly as imagined? Almost never. Once these facts are accepted, it is easier to understand that it is all part of the creative process. As frustrating as it can be for the creative perfectionist, it often works out for the better.
Through the struggles and triumphs of the creative process, nothing beats the works and ideas that come from it. At the end of the day, being a creative person is a gift not worth giving up.
